Composting Results, Summer of 2012

I started this years compost in May and was finally able to use the compost this past week. So it took a little less than 4 months, which isn't bad. I'm thinking that I'm going to continue composting throughout the cooler & then colder weather. It will take longer to decompose but I feel a little guilty when I toss scraps into the garbage, just because it's December.
Okay, on to the good stuff.
What I did do right.
- Took advantage of the free water. Whether it rained for 10 minutes or 10 hours, I took the lid off of the compost bin and let mother nature soak the contents.
- Even when I didn't water on schedule I turned the compost twice a week.
- Make sure everyone in the household knows & follows the composting rules. I can't tell you how often I had to pick out stickers, rubber bands and bit's of plastic from my compost pile. I'm disgusted with the amount of plastic product, I was still digging up. I swear some of that material was 15 years old.
To make the decomposition go faster I would do a few things differently.
- Water on a consistent basis. Say every other day.
- When it's very hot & very humid, water in the morning so it can really bake & steam for the rest of the day & night. Some days it was so hot you could see the steam coming from the compost pile.
- Leave the lemon and lime peels out of the main compost. They take longer and deserve their own compost pile. Which wouldn't be hard, because as a household we go through a lot of citrus fruits.
- Try to add grass clippings to the mix. I find they rot the best & fastest. Therefore speeding up the whole process. I only remembered during the last month or so.
The whole process has helped me to be more conscious of what I buy & use. I buy smaller amounts of fresh food at each grocery store/market visit. If I run out, that's better than having too much & not being able to consume it before it rots.
Sometimes you have to get down and dirty. Stick your bare hands in the rotting scraps and move it around. Not so bad once you remember that it's only fruits and veggies, not manure or meat.
