Conference Corner: What to Expect in Sessions

BlogHer Original Post

Every year BlogHer conference attendees ask what to expect during conference sessions. Sometimes because for many attendees, BlogHer is their first conference, but also because BlogHer events tend to be a little different than traditional conferences and seminars that many of our attendees have experienced. Our session format is typically very interactive, and our moderators hold different roles than some expect. Let me break it down:

SESSION FORMAT

Sessions are each 75 minutes long, and are dynamic panel conversations (with the exception of a couple breakouts in the “Experience” track). This means that we hope attendees will ask questions and share your own comments from the very first ten minutes, not as part of some brief Q&A in the last ten minutes. Most BlogHer sessions are not lectures or presentations, but rather a bilateral conversation among speakers and attendees. So when a question strikes you, simply raise your hand. A mic wrangler will make his/her way to you, and you’ll have an opportunity to voice your question. (We do ask that you wait for the mic, since we are recording every session for the BlogHer '11 Virtual Con, sponsored by J&J.)

MODERATORS

Moderators at BlogHer are not third-party interviewers. Rather, our moderators are also speakers with the added job of balancing the conversation between the speakers and attendees. Moderators field questions to speakers, and open the floor for commentary periodically throughout the session. But they have their own story to share.

LIVE BLOGS AND PODCASTS

Liveblogs will be full transcripts of each session; podcasts will be full recordings of each session. Both will be hosted in the aforementioned VirtualCon. The VirtualCon is a one-stop shop for all conference content, including liveblogs, podcasts, and video.

If you’re a newbie, what would you like to know about BlogHer events before attending your first conference? If you’re a veteran, what do you wish you had known beforehand? Or, perhaps you’re an introverted veteran attendee ... are there are things you *still* wish you knew, despite the number of conferences you’ve attended? I’d love to know!

About the Conference Corner: The Conference Corner is a weekly series about BlogHer events. Whether you’re a BlogHer newbie or BlogHer veteran, we hope you’ll gain some new insight in this segment!
