Conservatives Respond to the President's Congressional Address on Healthcare

Conservatives listened intently to the president's congressional address yesterday evening, including me; I watched it with a friend and live-blogged the event while a local news crew affixed a mic to my shirt and videotaped me in the event that my head exploded. I began compiling a round of of what some of my favorite female conservative bloggers had to say in response to the presidential address; most all shared similar concerns.

Truth be told, I almost girl-shrieked from excitement when Obama mentioned tort reform - I mean, we simply cannot, CANNOT have health care reform without some semblance of tort reform present. I literally had an "OMG for serious??" moment. My excitement waned as the president glossed over the issue and made no mention even of trial lawyers.

I've read a good deal of responses from the gents; here's a compendium of responses from the ladies:

Sister Toldjah:

And speaking of double standards, check out this video flashback of how Democrats heckled and booed President Bush during his 2005 SOTU address when he addressed the issue of Social Security. Ed Morrissey notes the hypocrisy of their then-versus-now attitudes on decorum.

[...]

You and your party are being “called out,” President Obama: The Democrat assertion that Republicans want to “abolish” Medicare is a lie.

Michelle's live-blog at A Traditional Life Lived:

7:31 Mis-states another HC statistic again. We have a much better track record for survivability.
7:32 Has he seen the fines Congress is proposing right now?

I wish my President would stop calling me a liar on national T.V.

Karen at Pondering Penguin:

President Obama offered no ideas on how the trillion dollar reform will be financed. Voters know. It will be taxes on small business and on those not desiring insurance coverage. They will be 'fined', which is code for tax. Doctor wages will be reduced. Hospital reimbursements will decline. You get the picture.

Another interesting moment happened when the President declared there are 30 million uninsured. That number is down from the number normally bantered about - 47 million. Why? The lesser number takes out the illegal immigrants. Obama has to make the claim that illegal immigrants will not be covered.

[...]

"We will call you out", he told the audience, on any perceived misstatements on his plan. Problem is, he has no plan. He has some bill moving around Congress but he didn't participate in the writing of the legislation and he appears to not know many details in the 1300 pages of legislation to be voted on in the House. He is deliberately short on details, falling instead into talking in campaign style talking points.

Pamela of Atlas Shrugs:

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), who yelled out “you lie!’ in the midst of President Obama’s speech before a joint session of Congress, has called the White House to offer an apology to Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

He apologized? For telling the truth?

Cassy Fiano:

As mentioned above, the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service found that the bill would, indeed, cover illegal immigrants, however inconvenient it may be for liberals to admit.

Here is the video from 2005, in which you can hear Democrats yelling and booing over George Bush as he talks about social security reform

[...]

For one brief, shining moment at least one Republican grew a pair. And sadly, he then remembered that he has an (R) next to his name, so he immediately surrendered his balls back to Obama again. Sigh.

DUDE. Read. My. Mind.

Personally, I would've told Rahm Emanuel that the president can have his apology when he apologizes to millions of patriotic Americans on behalf of his campaign apparatus for calling them "domestic terrorists" in a memorial post about 9/11. When Bush said "you're with us or against us" he was speaking directly to rouge nations, NOT people - making such a skewed analogy

In the link that you have posted, even the UltraLiberal St. Petersburg Times' "fact checking" (read: conservative debunking) service had to admit that the accusation of lying was "Half True." Why are you not saying anything about what comes after the section that you quoted and their final conclusion? Everyone please read the link that Erin posted. Even they admit that the bill is "mum on specifics." Shocker. But translation: that means loopholes. The article you cited goes on to say,

"Critics of the health care bill, however, cite a couple of possible loopholes. We'll address the one cited by the House Republican Conference, which has also been noted by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, an organization critical of illegal immigration. Both groups contend that the Democratic bills lack verification procedures to make sure that illegal immigrants aren't signing up for the affordability credits. Such safeguards, FAIR says, were included in the Welfare Reform Act of 1996, the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. From our examination of the House bill, we don't see any verification system, either. The Congressional Research Service, a non-partisan research arm of Congress, agrees. In a report issued Aug. 25, 2009, CRS wrote that "H.R. 3200 does not contain a mechanism to verify immigration status."

The most hilarious part of the article is one of the reasons they say it's only "half true" is because,

"The second caveat is that language in the House bill does provide clear authority for the new government official who will run the exchange to set up that verification, as the CRS report notes." In other words, it's only half true because the bill gives absolute power to decide on the verification process to one man appointed by Obama? Gee, I wonder what their decision would be? Bahahahahaha. You have got to be kidding me.

Almost as equally hilarious is the other reason your cited article says that it's only "half true." The reason? Because it would be up to the IRS to police matters. You have tears coming out of my eyes over here from laughing.

If your child told you a half-truth, would you consider it lying? I'm sure you've heard the phrase "lying by omission." Or in this case it's "lying by vague, government doublespeak."

Do you teach your kids to only apologize for rude, disrespectful comments that they make to those in authority ONLY if that person apologizes to them first?  That comment alone negates/clouds the rest of your piece for me.  (Politics aside, I'm really concerned about the lessons that people on both ends of the political spectrum are teaching the next generation.)

For those who may not read the link above:

"FAIR has a point that illegal immigrants would likely be able to buy insurance on the national health insurance exchange. We don't see anything in the bills that would hinder that. A Congressional Research Service report issued Aug. 25, 2009, confirmed our observation. The House bill "does not contain any restrictions on noncitzens participating in the Exchange — whether the noncitizens are legally or illegally present, or in the United States temporarily or permanently," the report said.

But it's worth pointing out that illegal immigrants participating in the exchange would be paying for their insurance like everyone else. That's similar to the current system — we're not aware of any particular restrictions that stop illegal immigrants from buying private insurance now. Under health care reform, illegal immigrants would be able to buy private insurance or the public option.

When we look at all of this evidence, it seems that health reform leaves in place the status quo on illegal immigration, and certainly does not provide any new benefits particularly for illegal immigrants. We hope to look at this issue more in the days ahead, because some hospitals are concerned about recouping their costs for treating illegal immigrants, and we're curious to know more about that problem and how it might or might not be solved by reform"

I'm befuddled over this whole thing... and I suspect that's the whole point.  No one exactly knows what's in the bill(s) that are floating around, so people stop paying attention.  Scary!

I was telling my husband the other day, why not just create a sliding scale at the federal level so the states can start offering buy-in for their medicare program based on income?  Wouldn't that allow for a 'public option' without bringing big brother into everyone's health care choices?

...not the immigration claim made by Wilson. Big difference. If we're discussion Wilson Vs Obama on if immigrants are covered in the bill, it's clear.

And I'm laughing equally as hard that you find the St. Petersburg Times Nobel Prize winning Polifact "ultraliberal"...

...and Al Gore won a Nobel Prize too. AHAHAHAHAHA. Everyone considers the St. Petersburg Times liberal. As a former resident of St. Petersburg whose parents still have residency there, I should know. Why don't you go down there and ask around?
