For my husband and me, cooking isn't a chore, it is a task we both enjoy. As we like to make meals at home, we often discuss meal ideas and new recipes. Our children typically are interested in our meal conversations, as they want to know what they will be eating.
Depending upon the menu (and possibly social options), the kids will ask to assist with meal preparation. Unless there is an absolute time crunch, we gladly accept that offer.
Cooking with the kids is a great family activity. Obviously, the children begin to learn basic cooking skills, which will have long-lasting benefits. There are opportunities to practice reading and math. The children tend to be more willing to try new foods if they have helped to make the meal. And you get time to be together and talk.
The other weekend we enjoyed the afternoon by taking a hike on a local nature trail and making dnner together. To read more, visit Your Parenting Info.
