Creme de La Mer vs Olay Regenerist: Battle of the anti-aging All-Stars

Hello!

My name is Roxanna. I think it's important that we get one thing out of the way: I love beauty products - fiercely. I like them so much that I spent my marketing career in the beauty industry and enjoyed every minute of it.

You probably should also know that I use it all: High-end to drugstore brands, I don't discriminate. I just care that it works.

I believe that makeup should be fun, but skincare? I take that seriously. Which brings me to today's post: Anti-aging creams. (Yes! I'm starting with the big guns.) I thought it would be fun to discuss two of the most hyped creams on the market - a "prestige" brand with a devoted cult following and another one that's beloved by dermatologists but you can find at the corner CVS.

Our contenders? Cult fave Creme de la Mer vs dermatologist darling Olay Regenerist Microsculpting Cream.

Which is better? Let's find out!

Creme de la Mer

cremedelamer.com

Retail: $125 for 1 oz

Texture: Hard and slightly tacky. Must be liquefied before use by rubbing vigorously between your palms. Definitely not for the lazy or the busy.

Scent: Expensive-smelling (as it should be!) subtle powdery floral.

Sales pitch: From the La Mer website:

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?
Because something has happened that cannot be explained. If miracles are defined as unique events that appear inexplicable by the laws of nature, then surely Crème de la Mer is a miracle. For here is the Crème that will truly change the way you see yourself, the Crème that has inspired a devoted following...

From there the story goes on to talk about how Dr. Max Huber, an aerospace physicist, was disfigured in a horrible lab accident and medical science was of not help so 6,000 experiments later he came up with the super secret seaweed formula that needs to ferment for many months before it turns into the Miracle Broth(TM) which is greater than the sum of its parts. Phew!

(Right. So the Creme "cannot be explained" and it's actions are "inexplicable" and "a miracle" - you simply have to BELIEVE. Uh-huh.)

My experience:

I actually like the La Mer Creme, despite the "BELIEVE!" marketing and the hefty price tag. I'm the type to have a night-time beauty routine, and having to warm up the cream before use makes you feel like you're doing something special for yourself. It's also an excellent moisturizer, and it certainly makes my skin look rosy and fills in some of those fine lines. I first thought it was too greasy for my combination skin, but I eventually figured out that I only needed to use a little bit. It does make my skin look dewy, though I suspect that the healthy glow is partly due to the physical effort needed to liquefy the cream.

How does it do that?

As much as I like the creme, and as much as I want to believe that a magical antiaging broth exists, there's a very good reason the cream works (i.e. moisturizes and plumps up the skin) - in addition to the seaweed broth it includes mineral oil and petrolatum, two very common and effective occlusive moisturizers. I'm not saying that the magic seaweed is useless, but we all know the wonders of baby oil and Vaseline (petrolatum) - they're pretty hard to beat. (Just ask Tyra - or better yet, watch her!)

Olay Regenerist Micro-Sulpting Cream

Olay.com

Retail: $25 for 1.7 oz

Texture: Light and moisturizing. Delightful.

Scent: Heavy floral scent. Very retro - if you like Chanel No. 5, you’ll like this fragrance.

Sales pitch: From the Olay website:

Regenerate your skin's appearance at the cellular level.

The result of over 50 years of Olay research, this luxurious cream has the highest concentration of our signature amino-peptide complex infused with intracellular fortifier and a touch of precious marine proteins.

Intracellular hydration regenerates volume and shape across skin's 10 million surface cells, progressively lifting and micro-sculpting...

The rest of it reads as if this cream is the medical achievement of the century. You practically need a PhD to understand it, which is the point.

My experience:

I hate the scent (Olay? I may be old enough to need an anti-aging cream, but I don't need to smell like it, thankyouverymuch) but I absolutely adore the light texture - my skin drinks this cream right up. It didn't take long for it to "work" - I woke up to

I have always (55 Years) used Olay products. Believe me, I have spent a fortune trying this one and then another, but always go back to Olay. I'm very curious about the La Mer line and might try....not sure, especially after reading what Roxanne had to say about La Mer versus Olay. I can't get over how expensive La Mer products are!!! I have very nice skin....everyone compliments me, but ladies, you know and I don't like to admit this......Always looking for that miracle serum lol : )

yes its a tacky creme, but liquifying it in your hands is just wasteful. unlikely you are buying this stuff for your palms. use one finger to pat a little bit onto your skin. the patting action warms it up. cover areas you want this way. then go back and pat/rub it in further. amazingly la mer seems to heal blemishes. i love this product but am poor at present so will try olay.

Suggestion!!!

Buy a trial size on ebay.  If people are lucky enough to get them at the cosmetic counter, they sell them on ebay.  That's how I got my first sample inexpensively and became hooked!

Hey Y'all!!

After years and years, and tons of money shelled out, I've finally found something that works as well as Creme De La Mer!!  I'm so tickled!  I have extremely dry skin and in the winter months, it can turn into a red rash, which can be itchy and painful.  My skin will also "crust up" and peel if the rash gets bad.  I've been fighting this for so long, have used almost everything there is to use out there.  Avon to Clarins to Olay to Dove to Estee to Clinique to........you name it.  La Mer worked really well as far as keeping my skin moisturized, kept the skin rash at bay.  Wrinkles?  Nah, I couldn't tell that it really helped with those.  I was purchasing La Mer on Ebay for approximately $20.00 for a .24 oz sample jar and using it very thinly!!  It's so costly!!

I'm not happy about La Mer having so many chemicals in it, so, I decided to give it one more shot and look for something natural.  I tried Dr. Hauschka Quince Day Cream and found that it works just as well, maybe a tad better, than Creme De La Mer, and it's NATURAL!!!  The cost is much less than La Mer also.  I tried the Hauschka Rose Cream, Daily Cream and they didn't work for me.  The Quince Day cream works!!  I also like the toner too, gets the dirt off that regular washing leaves behind.  You might give it a try!!  Prices on Ebay are much better than retail.  BEST OF LUCK!!  Hope this helps.

Hello,

I am in love with Creme de la Mer and I can't believe I've shelled out the money to buy a jar (thanks Craigslist). Although my jar is new, i'm panicky about it being used and gone. I usually use natural products and I have tried Resveratrol Ultra, but nothing seems to make my skin as smooth and hydrated as La Mer. I have seen the Olay cream on TV and after reading these comments, I might just give it a try. Does it really work for you ladies? Is it all in my head that because La Mer is so expensive it's the best thing out there? What natural products are out there that give the same results?

Let La Mer not be our only hope.

Ciao.

The first part of the report mentions the high turn-over of sales Boots received from the last time this Professor appeared on TV in 2007. Also, strange how the university only tested ONE make of skin cream.

I have frequently read that Nivea cream is pretty much the same as La Mer. I think we are paying for fragrance and maybe 1 special extract that justifies the big price tag.I wish I could use Olay, but all Olay products break me out. I am sensitive to the scent I think.

i use la mer... one year now... i like it a lot, but I wish it did not have parafin and minearl oil...

My skin is so hydrated, and just the best complexion as never before.... I am really happy about it... i would like to find something as effective, but more natural... If anyone knows please let us know

I agree with the time needed to break it down on the palm of your hand,... it gives the feeling you are doing something great to your skin.... I also love the sound and light technology used on the fermented broth.... I believe so much on the effects of sound on matter, specially on water... see Masaru Emoto "Messages from water"

I love the Olay Regenerist cream.  I've also tried LaMer, but I didn't think it worked any miracles.  It was okay, but not fabulous.

I love my skin care cream but I see the biggest difference with how much water I drink and taking my vitamin B & C each day.

It's what goes into my body that makes the most difference. When I eat badly I can see it quickly in my skin and hair.

For me they all go together - lots of water (not soft drinks as the chemicals are really bad for skin), lots of vegies, quality vitamins and my favorite Estee Lauder.

Belinda

I've been using products that have to be purchased through a consultant and have been very pleased with them.  Sometimes I think it would be so nice to just run to the drug store to get what I need...after reading your post, Olay Regenerist will be my first one to try!  Thanks for the info!!!  http://onthehomestretch.blogspot.com ( http://onthehomestretch.blogspot.com/ )

My mother's beauty regiment to this day includes moisturizing with Noxzema.  I don't even see commercials for Noxzema anymore because it's so old school.  I tried it, but I can't get past the smell.

Something must have worked because she's 63 and her face has a few laugh lines, which she doesn't want to get rid of.  Her hands are smoother than mine are.

Me, I use Body Shop's Vitamin E Cream Cleanser.  I, too have wanted to try La Mer ever since I heard Oprah swear by it.  One day I'll get there!

I have been stressing out about finding the perfect anti-aging cream to get a headstart on those $%$^ wrinkles and fine lines that I know are coming my way soon. My mom had a nighttime beauty routine, so I grew up around that and have one of my own, too. Right now I'm using just regular old Olay, but I know I need to transition to something better. Both of those look fab, but I REALLY want to splurge on the La Mer! I've been fantasizing about that cream for a while now, and your review does make me want to try it. I just hope I don't get too tired (read: too lazy) to keep emulsifying every time I have to use it... It would be a pity if I spent that much on it, and it ended up in the bottom of my train case.

Thanks for your $.02!

Great article! I have always been curious about Creme de la Mer, but have to admit to sticker shock. I do use Olay Regenerist and love it. I am on a retinol and as a result can't use a lot of products, but the Olay is just fine.

Thanks!

I've always wanted to try the LeMer, but could not come to terms with putting up the money for something like that only to not like it!  I do, on the other hand, use the Olay and I have to tell you that I, too, enjoy it.  I have sensitive, combination skin and this doesn't cause me to get that sunburned look or itch or breakout.  You're right. It's light.

I've also tried those little eye pod things from Olay and I really like those too.  Besides giving the appearance of reduced under eye lines, it kinda sorta takes off the remnants of yesterday's make up!!

I enjoyed your article.  Glad to hear you actually tried both.

Thanks!
