Anniversary of Roe V. Wade

If you end up behind me on the twisting roads of my small New England town you'll probably see the heads of several children (mostly) happily bopping around the backseat of my Volkswagen van, some of them mine, some of them friends. You'll see me trying, in vain, to keep order. You'll also probably notice the  Keep Abortion Legal sticker on the back of my van. More than one person has commented on the incongruity of the two images: the van nearly constantly full of children and the pro-choice bumpersticker. I don't see it. ...more

How did this happen?

I don't know when it started to happen, but about a month ago I was feeling upset and tired, mixture of things really. I blurted out to my husband that i was fed up of always being at the bottom of the pecking order. I know what prompted it at the time, but me actually saying that was a bolt from the blue, I am not that kind of person. what happened is that i was getting our toddler off to sleep and he came into the bedroom....more

Hitting Haiti While She's Down

By now, we have all heard Reverend Pat Robert's unfortunate comments regarding Haiti.  If you missed it, he stated that Haiti brought this calamity onto itself by making a pact with the devil to free herself from French rule.  Really?  Did the United States make a pact with the devil when she freed herself from England?  I think not.  ...more

The Blind Side's Michael Oher Needs to Get Glasses

I recently caught a snippet of a TV interview with Leanne Tuohy, the real-life mom portrayed by Sandra Bullock in the movie, “The Blind Side”.  I was impressed and moved by this movie, which tells the true story of a well-to-do family from Memphis who adopts a teen (Michael Oher) from the projects.  Among the many things they do for him, they help him feel loved ...more

N.J. Mom Charged After School Refuses To Take Action Against Bully

The report of a school superintendet in New Jersey pressing charges against a mom whose daughter was assaulted at school by a bully was shocking to me.  The boy pulled down the 13 year old girl's pants at school and no action was taken against the bully, so N.J....more

Dear NFL and the Networks that Broadcast Professional Sports

Hello, I have a favor to ask.  I know, you don't know me from Adam.  But hear me out.  Okay, chances are you won't ever hear me at all, but I'll give it a shot anyway. Like I said, I have a favor to ask.  Our kids love to watch sports.  They are 8 and 6 (and 21 months, but he's not a part of this issue, yet).  And they are boys.  ...more

Pop Goes the Church

Is it just me, or is anyone else bothered when the sacred tries too hard to be cool when embracing the secular, especially in trying to attract youth?  I think I started feeling that way about 13 years ago when I watched a neighbor’s video of her church youth choir, or I should say, megachurch youth choir. There were hundreds of teens onstage, swaying back and forth to a funky beat and singing (or would it be rapping?), “You down wit G.O.D.?...more
