Stacy's Sunday Legal Blog Round-Up

It goes without saying there are some great women's legal blogs out there, so here is just a small Sunday sampling (I'll be doing this a couple of times a week). At times, the blogs will touch on not only law, but politics, current events and even media and journalism because those issues necessarily overlap at times.

My hope is to review blogs that may be well-known to folks (like, say, Althouse or Lisa Stone) but also find blogs that people may have never heard of. I also want to sample blogs across the many different legal disciplines and ideologies.

If you know of any women's (individual or group) legal blogs that are not listed in the blogroll, please add them!

Ok, here we go:

The formidable and politically astute lawyer, Professor Ann Althouse, questioned Hillary Clinton's 11th hour support of a filibuster against Supreme Court nominee, Judge Samual Alito, and whether perhaps it had more to do with not wanting to be outdone by possible 2008 Presidential nemisis John Kerry, than any real guiding principle, but perhaps that remains to be seen....

La Shawn Barber, over at her blog 'La Shawn Barber's Corner', writes about her experience being one of a small number of black women at a 'March for Life' gathering recently, stating:

"I've never felt more like a "minority" than I did yesterday walking through the crowd. Some people did double-takes when they saw me, and as far as I know I didn't have anything hanging out of my nose. I pulled their focus because, as I said, there weren't many blacks there. I'm sure they wanted to ask me why, as if I'd know."

But ultimately, La Shawn finds a unity of purpose in the days events which outweigh her feelings of "minority."

A Family Law blog, LawProfessors.Typepad, covered the decision by the state of Washington to pass a civil rights bill protecting gays and lesbians from discrimination in housing, insurance and employment. The blog notes the implications these laws have on family law in Washington and elsewhere.

The 'Sassy Lawyer' eloquently argues why her country (the Philipines) made a huge mistake in allowing the United States special status when it signed the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the Philipines now that the U.S. refuses to turn over four servicemen accused of raping a Filipino woman while they were stationed over in the Philipines. She rightfully tells her country, "I told you so."

The blog of the National Women's Law Center, Nomination Watch, has been busy keeping an eye on first, the Alito confirmation hearings and second, the confirmation vote coming up in the Senate. Specifically, they note that with rare exception (those exceptions being Olympia Snowe and Kay Baily Hutchinson) women in the Senate are speaking out publicly against the nomination of Alito. Check out their blog to read the statements of Senators Clinton, Boxer, Mikulski, Feinstein, Stabenow, Murray and Lincoln.

And finally, one of my personal favorite blogs- Firedoglake- Jane Hamsher and Redd this week have been keeping an eye on the Scooter Libby trial, even if the mainstream media have basically forgotten that Scooter Libby ever existed. They note (in their famously sardonic way)that Libby's defense team have initiated a major pre-trial fishing expedition- it appears they are fishing for some reasonable doubt in the form of some journalists with questionable note-taking skills, bad memory and/or piss-poor reputations. Go figure.

But any day of the week, Firedoglake is worth checking out.
