Safe Cosmetics

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics website is a great resource. I've only just begun to carefully examine what I'm putting on my face, and the data is eye-opening, to say the least.

One caveat: you have to look at your risk over time. (You have a greater cancer risk from sunbathing sans protection than ethyl...something.) No one got cancer from the talc in her face powder (still, I've converted to the talc-free kind) alone, and no one is saying to stop coloring your hair completely (lord no, please don't tell me to stop coloring my hair), but it's great to have options. Like anything knowledge is key.

Beauty is Only Skin Deep

Apparently beauty truly is only skin deep. So deep, in fact, that many of the products with which we slather ourselves daily can be causing us harm. Courtesy of information found at The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, run by the Breast Cancer Fund, I'd like to ask: How would you like a dose of Dibutyl Phthalates, an additive known to impair fertility, with your new perfume? Or perhaps you'd like a smattering of Ethylene Oxide, a breast carcinogen, with the shampoo that promised to make your mane thick and lovely? Perhaps a wee bit of Acrylamide, another carcinogen, in your sunscreen? I wanted to know what was going on with cosmetic "safety" and knew just where to look to find answers.

Read about the organizations taking action against chemical-laden cosmetics at Solarkat's Eco blog.

Arm yourself with information about how phthalates are affecting our baby boys at Barefoot in the Garden.

Find out why Jack & Hill, A Beauty Blog believes we need "fewer regulations on cosmetic ingredients, not more."

After reviewing all of this information, in case you are inclined to toss your toxic products, click back to Solarkat for information on natural cosmetics, including brand recommendations and resources for further research.
