My personal theory

I am constantly advocating 4-6 mini meals a day rather than the more traditional meal schedule. I am always happy when I stumble upon someone else who advocates such a thing.

Good luck throughout the rest of the program!

First Week Check-In

One week into the program and what can report?

1. Core exercises look easy.. but they're not. And they leave me sore the next day.

2. I sweat more when walking inside than out. Is it humidity or intensity? I'm not sure.

3. I still like working weight machines. Why have I avoided them for 10 years? And, damn, in most directions my arms/shoulders are strong!

4. One key diet recommendation: eat 300 calories every 3 hours throughout the day. This, too, sounds easy, but it's taken time to get the thought going. Now it seems to be working.

5. I lost 2# in this first week. Guido, my trainer, thinks this all from the 3/300 plan.

Love it

I love Half of Me. She's actually doing the South Beach diet. I sent her an e-mail a while back telling her she should be writing a book. She's such a good writer.

I think my biggest problem/challenge

I think my biggest problem/challenge is firming the body, and getting it flexible again. Hence the trainer. My diet itself aint' too bad... calories in range and balanced nutrition.

I think that activity goes hand-in-hand with diet. The part I'm trying with Guido (my pseudonym for my trainer) and mainly will be blogging about is the missing element in my life.

One of my favourite

One of my favourite weight loss blogs is Half of Me. If you click on Progress you can see several 360* views of her weight loss. She's lost more than 150lbs since she started.

I'll be watching Deby's progress. Gyms scare me (for many reasons) so I'm interested in the idea of trainer sesssions.

Before and After

Debra, and anyone who is wondering if it's worth the trouble to try to lose weight, here's my before and after photos. I probably wouldn't have ever posted them on my blog except I was featured in a magazine, and they promised to put the url of the blog, so it seemed worth it. Still it's mildly embarassing to have people who know me now to see how fat I truly was.

I guess if it inspired anyone else to want to lose weight, it will be worth sharing the photos.

Good luck Debra

Good luck Debra. Most of my life I was pretty thin, but then from about age 45-55 I gained over 40 pounds. I'd never been good at dieting since I was always a foodie. I'm not sure what drew me to the South Beach Diet, but it worked for me in a wonderful way. I lost more than 10 pounds the first two weeks, and lost 35 pounds in about 6 months. It took me almost a year to slowly lose the last 7 pounds, for a total of 42 pounds lost. I was also able to quit taking cholesterol medication, and in fact my cholesterol numbers were all better after a year on this diet (without medication) than they had ever been when I was taking medication.

Having said all that, the most important thing about dieting IMHO is to pick a diet that works with your own food preferences. I was never too much of a sweets eater, which I think is one reason South Beach works so well for me. I've kept the weight off for more than two years now (while writing a food blog!) and for me this is a permanent change in eating habits.

Funny what we'll each put on our blogs. There is no way inhell I'd post a photo like you did... and while I tell my weight, I won't photograph the scale. But I did put all my measurements out there!! What exactly are you doing to lose the weight? Wannabe BlogHer weightloss buddies?

The Six Week Program

24 Hour Fitness just started advertising a six week program. The gist is you pay $49 dollars on top of your normal membership fees and you get diet counseling and some work with a personal trainer.

Does it work? I don't know yet, but we are about to find out. Debra Roby just signed up.

Six weeks with abbreviated trainer sessions and some diet counseling. I signed up. Do I expect to lose the 15# they promise in six weeks? No. Just being realistic. I want to lose a total of about 25#.. and it just seem unlikely that all of that could done in ...what?.. 8-10 weeks?

I don't know about you guys, but I am going to check back in on this one over at Deb's Daily Distractions. If it works I think that $50 is a very affordable price to pay to lose fifteen pounds.

Contributing Editor Sarah also blogs at Sarah and the Goon Squad and Draft Day Suit.
