Panama Canal....

You can see the locks, which can be incredibly boring unless you get lucky and click in when a ship is going through. But still sort of interesting (and my kids like to click in sometimes because we lived near Gatun and Miraflores for a long time)

Volcano cams

A friend sent me a link to Africam, and I wondered what I'd find if I went looking for webcams in Latin America. City traffic cams, central historic downtowns, volcanoes, and resorts. And the other day, I was just explaining about Paricutin, which grew suddenly out of a cornfield in the 1940s. First let's look at the volcanoes!

Popocatepetl, Mexico - latest image of the volcano! This is a good one with smoke billowing out a lot of the time, and helpful disaster information for residents. Here's a bit about the volcano and its history from Wikipedia.

Colima, in Mexico. Often cloudy and impossible to see anything interesting! But when you do see the smoking mountain it's amazing.

Nicaragua's volcanoes, live on camera. I found several volcanoes: Concepcion, Cerro Negro, Momotombo, San Cristobal, and Telica, which erupted recently.

As I poked around looking for volcanoes for no particular reason... I came across Where's Laura?
, a travel blog, where she gives a summary of her 8 week trip through several Central American countries. She swam with dolphins in Honduras, and saw some lava erupting at Volcan Pacaya in Guatemala. In fact, a little more searching got me quite a few travel blogs, by French and English speakers. And that's what tourists seem do in Nicaragua. They climb up volcanoes! Hot, sweaty, thirsty, covered in dust, feet hurting from gravel, and kind of wondering mid-way through why they're doing it.

Contributing Editor Liz Henry also blogs at Composite and Badgermama.
