Of course you're right, but

The readers most appealing to advertisers are online, if the direction of ad dollars is any indication. That fact does have more news organizations putting more of their investment into their online product. Some are even advocating that online news distribution should be primary, with the print edition as an adjunct, rather than the other way around.

Of course, the Wired prediction isn't completely new. You probably remember this video, which predicted the emergence of completely customizable news and the concommitant death of the New York Times by 2014.

when a prediction like this comes from Wired...

it always sounds to me like some sort of "wishful thinking" for the American press...

but the thing is, we have a massive disparity in internet access betweeen the cities and the countryside that could make full digitiation of a major newspaper in the U.S. an absolute disaster. Perhaps Sweden is more well-wired than we are here, but we've got a very long ways to go when it comes to equal broadband access.

World's oldest newspaper goes exclusively online

The first of Wired Magazine's predictions for 2007 has come true:

"A major newspaper gives up printing on paper to publish exclusively online."

The Post- och Inrikes Tidningar (Post and Domestic Newspapers) Sweden's official newpaper for public notces, first began publishing in 1643, during the reign of Queen Kristina -- the fabled and controversial monarch who abdicated her throne to travel the world and study philosophy and art. By order of Swedish Parliament, the newspaper is now published on the website of the Swedish Companies Registration Office.
