VA legislator moves to criminalize abortion in Virginia

So much for a new day in American politics...please read this alert from Planned Parenthood and if you are so moved, take action: blog about it!

Planned Parenthood learned this morning that anti-choice hardliner Del. Bob Marshall (R-13) is introducing an abortion ban during the 2007 General Assembly session, which starts tomorrow. House Bill 2124 states that if and when Roe v. Wade is overturned, Virginia would return to the laws on its books pre-Roe. What does this mean?? It means that performing an abortion would be a criminal offense in Virginia, punishable by law.

Restrictive measures like these are out of touch with mainstream America. Most people, including most Virginians, know that the best way to reduce unintended pregnancies and abortions is to support prevention measures. Not only are these measures both common sense and good public policy, these measures have been shown as the only way to truly make a dent in the number of abortions, STI transmissions, teen pregnancies, and maternal deaths. If Virginia legislators truly want to reduce the need for abortion, they should support prevention measures like access to birth control, family planning services, and comprehensive sex education. Put Prevention First!

Please, click here to take action and help protect reproductive rights in Virginia:
