Browsing punk rock from Mexico

Bajafest 2007 (English), at the Children's Museum in Tijuana, is a 3 day music festival with "Rock / POP /Reggae / Hip Hop / R&B / Latin Sounds such as Reggeaton, Merengue, Cumbia and much more. " I noticed it on the myspace of one of my favorite punk rock bands, Las ultrasónicas.

If you want to digress into Mexico City punk rock videos then check out some Ultrasonicas stuff on YouTube, and this interview with the band on ravinglacapital.net: Entrevista con Las Ultrasonicas - try this one, it's very rude and crude, and should make pretty much anyone laugh: Oh hell, I can't even bring myself to type the name of the song... - And in another version at the MTVLA Music Awards, they face off with the same song, with what looks to be the super femmy announcer of the awards singing along with enthusiastic obscenity in a battle of the sexes with punk band Molotov. I enjoyed the announcer's attitude! For a sweeter song, try this excellent version of "Freak de la sociedad" with what looks like a homemade slide show.

Jessy Bulbo (formerly the bass player of Las ultrasónicas) has a new album out, with fellow band members Galaxy and Hector: Saga Mama
. Jessy's bass and vocals are tight, rough, hard driving, and explosive - If you like riot grrrl music, Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, Sleater-Kinney, then you'll like Jessy Bulbo (and Las Ultrasónicas). I like Jessy's songs that are almost pop, or twee punk, but also her heavier Velvet Underground wall of noise performances, like this amazing live version of Maldito.
