Travel Odds and Ends: City Stories, Making a Living, Trusted Bloggers

Home Turf Media is running their next Carnival of Cities. The carnivals are easy to participate in, fun to read and help you find terrific new bloggers.

Chicago, Illinois, USA. J.E. invites us to join the throngs in The Wiener’s Circle, which is a popular hot dog and burger joint in the Windy City. They seem to be big on putting cheese on everything; must be the proximity to Wisconsin.

Paris, France. Myra says, “Hello? can anyone understand me?” at parties where she’s surrounded by French speakers but can’t communicate herself. She blogs at my life with depression.com, where she’s taking back control of her life, one day at a time.

Rolf Potts of Vagablogging tells yet another aspiring writer not to quit her day job. I'm just back from a short press trip and I have to second his advice - I'll come out at about a 40 dollar loss when all is said and done. It's a hard way to make a living.

I didn't sell a travel article for money until I was 28 -- and, while I am a full-time travel writer now with books under my belt, I still don't make much money as a freelancer. Few people do.

In All My Stars has an interesting post in response to the National Geographic article about the questionable reliability of travel bloggers.

And with that I’d like to announce a new project here at in my All Stars: a Trusted Travel Blog network. I’m not yet sure if this one’s going to work, and I’m still working out many details, but hopefully soon there will be a nice little site set-up that keeps track of a list of quality, honest travel blogs. With a little luck this list will gain some authority and National Geographic Traveler can write something positive about us good guys.

Pam blogs about travel and other adventures at Nerd's Eye View.
