CAN SOMEONE HELP ME

I received my first Gardisil vaccine on August 7, 2007. Two days later I started to break out in hives. I broke out in hives every night for 7 months. It has been two years since my first vaccine and I still break out about 2-3 days every week. Every doctor I went to told me it was stress. I never related the vaccine to my sickness. In the beginning it was just allergies. After three months it was possibly some type of autoimmune disease. When everything came back normal (except my WBC count being low and still is) I was just “crazy”. I decided to get my next two vaccines. I had severe side effects about an hour after the third one in August 2008. I could feel every bone in my body from my hips up; they hurt. My skin hurt, it hurt to wear clothes and to take a shower. I had a headache so severely that I felt like it burnt my brain. I called my doctor’s office and they told me it was normal. Since, I have had arthritis in my hands. Fatigue has also been a side effect. Some days I’m so tired that I don’t want to get out of bed. I have spent two years trying to find out what was wrong with my body. It wasn’t until last week that I finally put two and two together. The dates of my health problems and when I received my vaccines are undenyable. I contacted my OB/GYN who said that there are NO adverse side effects to this vaccine. This vaccine has destroyed my health and almost destroyed my mind. I graduated in may 2009 with a B.S. in Chemistry and high hopes to go to medical school. Every physician I have gone to in the past two years has made me feel like I’m completely insane and just too stressed out. I decided that if I couldn’t deal with the stresses of everyday living, then how could I become a physician? I’m taking a year off from school and have zero stress. I still wake up in the mornings with stiff hands. I still break out in hives 2-3 times every week. The only thing I’m guilty of is listening to physicians telling me I’m stressed out while knowing in my gut that it was something else. Sheer stupidity led me to get the next two vaccines… I had enough health problems and I sure didn’t need anymore, is what I thought. PLEASE PROTECT YOUR FRIENDS AND DAUGHTERS. DO NOT LET THEM GET THE GARDISIL VACCINE. I WOULD RATHER HAVE CERVICAL CANCER!!!!!

With all of this being said, I cannot extract the vaccine from my body. My physician's office is not helpine me at all. They are telling me that their Merck rep says there are no known adverse side effects. Apparently Merck offers the only "accepted" medical studies. They are telling me that there is a lot of information that can be read on the internet, but that it's false and not medically accepted. I need to know what diseases can be onset be the HPV vaccine. I do not have lupas and is the only one I can find. I am at this point hopeless, helpless, and since graduating college uninsured as well. Can someone point me in the right direction? Are these side effects ever going to go away or am I screwed for life?

What happened is those with greater intelligence (and getting big 'incentives') want to protects us from our own stupidity. An interesting twist on this is the argument put forth by the vaccine advocates: Those of us who aren't falling all over ourselves to go get all the latest and greatest vaccines are putting civilization at risk by running around dirty and infested by all kinds of communicable diseases. I guess they never heard of the natural ways to keep healthy and well.

Don't get discouraged - Many are questioning the message that BigPharma + BigMoney = Great health.

I agree

I was against Gardasil, before reading this. Your article was very well written, and covered the issues. I agree that someone should make their own decision, that is best for their child. Lots of politicians are backed by lobbyists, that work for these drug companies. They get paid tons of money, to get lawmakers to pass legislation, that favors the drug companies. It is really sick, and sad, that they can impose such stupidity on the people of this country. Fine make the vaccine available, let parents be informed and make a decision, but dont make it mandatory. That is ludicrous. Especially for a child as young as nine. Give me a break, how many 9 yr olds are sexually active. This is a STD, we are talking about. I for one, will not allow this vaccine given to my child, especially at 9. One more thing, why is it always young girls that are targeted when these things come out. Are there not young boys that are sexually active. Why are they never made a vaccine, to help not get an STD? Not that I would give that to my son either, but it never occurs, to even argue about it.

another bad reaction.

Hi,

I've been trying to find information EVERYWHERE as to how long the 1st shot lasts in your system. I noticed you posted that the entire three shots lasts about 4 years, but I only received the 1st shot.

The reason I'm asking is because I've decided not to continue with the shots as they have made me very sick. My symptoms have included: severe nausea & dizziness, fever, feeling weak/faint, very little appetite, etc. I got my first shot on July 15th and a few days later started feeling the effects. It feels like I'm FINALLY starting to get a little better, but I still get waves of nausea & dizziness. My doctor doesn't believe me when I say I think its the Gardasil (surprise, surprise).

All I want to know is an approximate time frame for this junk to be out of my system so I can start feeling better!

Thanks.

Gardasil bad reaction for my daughter...

Pelvic pain
Severe stomach pain
Pain, swelling or stiffness in joints
Pain, swelling, redness or itching at the injection site
Mild fever
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach (always)
Dizziness (often)
Runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough
Muscle pain and general weakness (constant)
Fainting (2 times)

My daughter has recvd 2 of the vaccines/shots and will not get the third. She has been hospitilized (ER) twice over the past 5 months. Once, by ambulance from her college dorm. Diagnosis: NONE-stress etc due to college life. They ran blood tests, ultrasound for ? of gallbladder disease/stones--all negative. Next, they want to run GI series. Of course, I will have these test, in fear that there could be something else but I am so sceptic now after reading all these reports and blogs...

My daughter is an athlete, plays college Lacrosse, and is in such pain all the time now. She NEVER had any of these symptoms prior to recving this vaccine. PLEASE, think twice about having your daughter receive this vaccine. Educate yourself and her about the ramifications of this drug. Teach her to abstaine instead of feeling the pain from this drug... even death (God forbid).

Thanks for this discussion,

Thanks for this discussion, Catherine. I never ceases to amaze me what absolute blind faith people have in pharmaceuticals -- as if they were in business to make us better. Conglomarates that own drug companies are very diverse and usually own a whole host of other even less savory companies; companies responsible for generating toxins in our air and water -- toxins which create the very diseases the pharmaceuticals claim to "cure". The whole concept of "curing" cancer is a fallacy. Cancer will never be cured. Zillions of dollars have been collected for cancer cures and more and more people are getting it and dying from it. The key must be cancer prevention -- not through more drugs (i.e.: questionable vaccines), but through less exposure to toxic substances in our every day lives. I've talked about this issue and the HPV vaccine specifically on my blog (www.urbanpedestrian.blogspot.com), so I won't go on and on now.

UPDATED INFORMATION on the Gardasil Vaccine (3rd update)

This is information that has been brought to my attention, and that I think is very important to share with anyone concerned about this vaccine.

(Washington, DC) -- Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released documents obtained from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, detailing 1,637 reports of adverse reactions to the vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV), Gardasil. Three deaths were related to the vaccine. One physician’s assistant reported that a female patient “died of a blood clot three hours after getting the Gardasil vaccine.” Two other reports, on girls 12 and 19, reported deaths relating to heart problems and/or blood clotting. -- read full article

Information on the side affects of this vaccine are continuing to come out, and adding to the controversy of whether the benefits outweigh the risks of this vaccine.

As of May 11, 2007, the 1,637 adverse vaccination reactions reported to the FDA via the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) included 371 serious reactions. Of the 42 women who received the vaccine while pregnant, 18 experienced side effects ranging from spontaneous abortion to fetal abnormities.

Side effects published by Merck & Co. warn the public about potential pain, fever, nausea, dizziness and itching after receiving the vaccine. Indeed, 77% of the adverse reactions reported are typical side effects to vaccinations. But other more serious side effects reported include paralysis, Bells Palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and seizures. -- -- read full article

These new findings bring into greater question the government attempting to mandate this vaccine for young girls.

“The FDA adverse event reports on the HPV vaccine read like a catalog of horrors,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “Any state or local government now beset by Merck’s lobbying campaigns to mandate this HPV vaccine for young girls ought to take a look at these adverse health reports. It looks as if an unproven vaccine with dangerous side effects is being pushed as a miracle drug.”

Judicial Watch filed its request on May 9, 2007, and received the adverse event reports from the FDA on May 15, 2007. -- adverse event reports

In following-up on this information I came across article after article that were still referring to Gardasil as a "cancer" vaccine. Gardasil is a vaccine that "may" prevent the HPV virus...Gardasil is NOT a cancer vaccine. I find this very troubling because there is a very big difference between a vaccine that prevents cancer and a vaccine that prevents a virus that "may" cause cancer. This is a "purposeful" deception by Merck to scare parents into getting this vaccine for their daughters.

A recent study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also questioned the general effectiveness of Gardasil.

If this practice is not illegal...it is most certainly unethical. But, it is working...and the reason it is working is because the "media" is perpetuating this idea by continuing to repeat it. It is very important to remember that just because you "hear" something 100 times, that doesn't make it true. It seems to me that it is the difference between "facts" and "brainwashing". (ie: Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. "No, they actually did not" - Bin Laden was responsible for 9/11. "No, we know who was responsible for 9/11, and it was not Bin Laden") This is a practice that has been extremely affective for politicians, and why we see so many "attack" ads on television around election time. Now the pharmaceutical companies are taking a page from the political campaigners, and manipulating facts to deceive the American people. The question is...are we going to let them get away with it? I hope not.

I challenge the media to stop allowing politicians and corporations to deceive the American people, I challenge them to report the facts (not talking points, and false accusations).

Thanks for your comment and your link. It is so important for people to understand that Gardasil is NOT a cancer vaccine. I agree with you 100%...and I hope anyone interested in learning more about the HPV virus and this vaccine will check out your very informative site. Thank you again for your comment.

Big Misconception

Marketing this vaccine as a "cancer" vaccine is not only wrong, it's illegal. If this product was anyother thing, the FDC would be cutting the ads in no time, no questions asked. This vaccine prevents against four types of a VIRUS not cancer.

It's also interesting to note that considering the fact that most cervical cancer takes 10 years to develop from pre-cancerous cells AND the fact that Merck has only been studying the vaccine for 5 years; it makes you wonder how they are able to claim that it prevents cancer.

Also, most of the women who get diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer hadnt had a pap test within the previous five years (and most of those women NEVER even had a pap test in their lives!).

Oh well, for more information regarding HPV and the vaccine, you can visit www.YourRight2Choose.org , a non profit organization in Florida focused on education the public about HPV.

Hi Belinda -- This vaccine is touted as a vaccine against cancer, but it is simply a vaccine against some of the viruses that may cause this type of cancer.

You are correct, a vaccine against cancer would be wonderful. Unfortunately, this Gardasil vaccine if nothing more than a vaccine against a few (treatable) viruses.

Not that it shouldn't have it's place in the market, it just shouldn't be touted as something it is not.

Vaccinations or Cures for All Cancers Please!

I think there are a few themes coming out here and it is interesting how information is passed about.

Yes, pharma companies are into profits, yes, advertising is often designed to be emotionally powerful, yes, we do need to be active in our democracies and question our governments and yes, we do need to be researching medical developments so we're well informed and capable of intelligent choices.

I've never thought pharma companies to produce balanced and unbiased information about their products. It is certainly the role of agencies giving permission for the sale of drugs to thoroughly test and research the products to know what they are judging.

If these agencies are influenced by lobby groups or influenital individuals or businesses then there is a serious problem and must be fixed.

As with all drugs time will tell who did their job properly and who didn't.

But a start has to be made and to me finding ways to vaccinate against cancer is a great thing that can lead to even more amazing results. Locally for us the government is covering the cost of the vaccinations for girls as it is seen as a cheaper option than the health costs in years to come.

Here's to a vaccination or cure for all cancers that breaks hearts and steal joy.

Best wishes,
Belinda

Still More Gardasil Information

GARDASIL is a new vaccine from Merck that has now been clinically shown to strongly protect against two dangerous, cancer associated HPV strains -- HPV 16 and HPV 18 -- for at least three years among women previously unexposed to these strains. HPV 16 and HPV 18 are currently associated with 70% of all cervical cancer cases. Medical experts hope that this means that GARDASIL could potentially end up reducing cervical cancer contraction rates by as much as 70%. So far, the limited clinical evidence available tells a very different story.

Because so few women contract cervical cancer and because cervical cancer's average latency period after initial HPV infection is over 20 years, it would take hundreds of thousands of subjects and/or decades to conclusively demonstrate that GARDASIL actually reduces cervical cancer rates in any population. Therefore, the end points used to demonstrate GARDASIL's effectiveness against cervical cancer in GARDASIL's two biggest studies (FUTURE I & II) were chosen to be the number of high grade cervical lesions -- or alternatively, the number of patients with high grade cervical lesions -- prevented over a 3 year period. High grade cervical lesions consist of grade 2 and grade 3 cervical intraepithelial neoplasias and all adenocarcinomas in situ. Among women in the USA, the vast majority of high grade cervical lesions either regress spontaneously or are successfully treated. However, the FDA currently considers high grade lesions to be acceptable surrogate outcomes for cervical cancer.

Here are the most recent and by far most comprehensive clinical results for GARDASIL in terms of reduction of high grade cervical lesions over a three year period.

For the general 16 to 26 year old population

FUTURE I

For the unvaccinated group, there were 194 total high grade lesions diagnosed -- 101 associated with HPV 16 & 18 and 93 associated with other dangerous, cancer causing HPV strains. For the vaccinated group, there were 182 total high grade lesions diagnosed -- 76 associated with HPV 16 & 18 and 106 associated with other dangerous HPV strains. That's a 6% overall decrease high grade HPV lesions but a 14% increase in other dangerous unprotected HPV strains for the vaccinated group.

FUTURE II

For the unvaccinated group, there were 361 total high grade lesions diagnosed -- 207 associated with HPV 16 & 18 and 154 associated with other dangerous, cancer causing HPV strains. For the vaccinated group, there were 281 total high grade lesions diagnosed -- 103 associated with HPV 16 & 18 and 178 associated with other dangerous HPV strains. That's a 22% overall decrease high grade lesions but a 16% increase in high grade lesions associated with dangerous unprotected HPV strains for the vaccinated group.

In terms of individual subjects rather than lesions (some subjects had multiple high grade lesions), vaccinated patients were 17% less likely to develop high grade cervical lesions overall but 15% more likely to develop high grade cervical lesions associated with dangerous unprotected HPV strains.

Combined FUTURE I & II

For the unvaccinated groups, there were 555 total high grade lesions diagnosed -- 308 associated with HPV 16 & 18 and 247 associated with other dangerous, cancer causing HPV strains. For the vaccinated groups, there were 463 total high grade lesions diagnosed -- 179 associated with HPV 16 & 18 and 284 associated with other dangerous HPV strains. That's a 16.6% decrease in overall high grade lesions but a 15.0% increase in high grade lesions associated with dangerous unprotected HPV strains for the vaccinated group.

For the sub-population of subjects who tested negative for both HPV 16 and 18

FUTURE I: Merck did not publish these results.

FUTURE II: Vaccinated patients were 27% less likely to develop high grade cervical lesions overall and at most 8% more likely to develop high grade cervical lesions associated with dangerous HPV strains other than HPV 16 & 18.

For the sub-population of subjects who tested positive for either HPV 16 and 18 or both

FUTURE I: Merck did not publish these results.

FUTURE II: Vaccinated patients were 9% less likely to develop high grade cervical lesions overall and at least 105% more likely to develop high grade cervical lesions associated with dangerous HPV strains other than HPV 16 & 18.

This is not an opinion. These are Merck's very own published clinical results for FUTURE I and FUTURE II.

More links to check out on the Gardasil controversy.

Here are some recent articles you may want to weigh in on...

Is Gardasil Worth the Shot?

This is what MERCK is saying about the newly released report.

Interestingly enough this link for Medical News Today seems to be an exact copy of the above news release from Merck.

This seems to me to further blur the line between news and advertising. The media appears to just pick-up on Corporate talking points, and present them as news. This does not benefit the public, and the news media should discontinue this practice at once. (Not only on this topic, but on every topic they are currently doing this...Including but not limited to politics, global warming, and gas prices).

Merck: Making a Big Pharma Comeback

From The New York Times - Health
CONCORD, N.H. — "A vaccine for a sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer may be creating controversy across the country, but in New Hampshire physicians say so many people want it that they cannot satisfy the demand."

Me, in response to the above: It seems irresponsible to me for a State or physician to give a controversial vaccine simply because the public is "demanding" it. 1) The public can and may be swayed by misleading information being provided by Merck. 2) The public did not go to medical school (although they should be informed and educated on these issues), the deciding factor on a whether a vaccine's benefits outweigh the risks, should be made by a medical professional. When and if there are reported consequences to this vaccine, the physicians who administered this drug should not be allowed to "blame" the outcome on the public demands. 3) What if the public started demanding Morphine for headaches? Medication decisions need to (and always have been) made by the physician. The medical community bares this responsibility, not the public.

Spinning the facts on Gardasil

Interestingly enough...as I am following up on the above update...I came across this:

From Vaccine Rx

Elaborate information on the study came up in the May 10, 2007 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

A consensus was then reached by the researchers that Gardasil was essentially effective against the targeted strains of HPV and produced a relevant decrease in anogenital disease.

This is just one of many articles I have seen "evaluating" this May 10th report by the New England Journal of Medicine. It smells like "spin" to me. It seems to me that this study is being misrepresented by many in the media.

I'm going to continue to look into this, and update accordingly. If anyone else can weigh-in on this controversy or has links that I should check out...I would welcome your input. Thank you.

Gardasil -- The Three Faces of the HPV Vaccine...Fear, Facts, and Profits.

Something very disturbing has been happening. Pharmaceutical companies are manipulating us with fear. It was bad enough when these companies began advertising prescription drugs on television. But now they have taken this tactic a step further; and began using fear for the life of our children, to persuade us that we need to get the HPV Vaccine for our daughters. This is the most sinister of abuse...using the love parents have for a child, to manipulate them through fear...for profit.

I will not be trying to convince anyone to get or not to get the Merck HPV Vaccine (Gardasil). What I will try to do with this post is address the facts surrounding the controversy, so all parents can make an informed decision about whether or not to get this vaccine for their child. I'll begin with my personal opinion...Never make a major decision for yourself or your child out of fear.

So now lets talk a bit about the facts, the ones you won't hear about on the ten second commercials that we are all seeing on television recently.

When detected in the early stages, the HPV virus is easily treated and rarely proceeds to cancer. Between 1955 and 1992 the number of cervical cancer deaths in the United States dropped by 74%. This decrease is largely attributed to the increased use of the PAP test. (The PAP is a diagnostic screening that can detect changes on a womens cervix even before cancer develops, as well as find cancer at the earliest stages when it is most curable.) Because of early diagnosis and treatment, the death rate from cervical cancer continues to decline about 4% each year.

Because the vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV, it will not prevent all cases of cervical cancer or genital warts. About 30% of cervical cancers will not be prevented by the vaccine, so it will be important for women to continue getting screened for cervical cancer (regular Pap tests). Also, the vaccine does not prevent about 10% of genital warts—nor will it prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). So it will still be important for sexually active adults to reduce exposure to HPV and other STIs. -- from the CDC

LEBANON, N.H. - A lead researcher who spent 20 years developing the vaccine for human papilloma virus says the HPV vaccine is not for younger girls, and that it is "silly" for states to be mandating it for them. Not only that, she says it's not been tested for effectiveness in younger girls, and administering the vaccine to girls as young as 9 may not even protect them at all. And, in the worst-case scenario, instead of serving to reduce the numbers of cervical cancers within 25 years, such a vaccination crusade actually could cause the numbers to go up. -- read full article

Another important risk factor for developing cervical cancer is smoking. Smokers are at least twice as likely as non-smokers to develop cervix tumors. Smoking may also increase the importance of the other risk factors for cancer. Finally, being in a low socioeconomic group seems to increase your likelihood for developing and dying from cervical cancer. This may be because of increased smoking rates, or perhaps because there are more barriers to getting annual screening exams. -- read article

This year there will be about 3,670 deaths from cervical cancer in the United States, and the vast majority of these cases will be in patients who have never had a PAP test, or cervical screening. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, at the time I am writing this article there are approximately 301,718,307 people in the United States, and about half of those are women. Statistically speaking the death rate due to cervical cancer is very small. To put these numbers in even more perspective...

Every year, more than 500,000 American women die from cardiovascular disease. Heart disease actually kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. -- read full article

About 178,480 women in the United States will be found to have invasive breast cancer in 2007. About 40,460 women will die from the disease this year. Right now there are slightly over 2 million women living in the United States who have been treated for breast cancer. -- from American Cancer Society

From the CDC (National Vital Statistics) - 3,454 Americans died of malnutrition in 2001.

Here are a few more important facts about the HPV Vaccine:

How long does Gardasil last? Tests show that the vaccine lasts at least four years. Long-term results aren't known yet. -- from WebMD

Also see this article on adverse reactions to Gardasil from The National Vaccine Information Center

What about the profits? If every sixth-grade girl (just in Georgia) were to get this vaccine (at a cost of $360 for a three-shot series) , the cost would be over $20 million dollars. There are over 21 million sixth-grade girls in the United States today, so the profit margins for this vaccine (and Merck) are staggering. Furthermore, the group of female legislators (Women In Government), who have pushed for nationwide legislation to require this vaccine, is heavily funded by Merck itself (as well as several other pharmaceutical companies). This marketing and legislative push by Merck, is largely due to their desire to "corner the market" before similar vaccines are released later this year. This is not millions of dollars we are talking about, this is billions of dollars in profit for the Merck Pharmaceutical Company.

No vaccine, at least one not connected to a potential pandemic, has moved so quickly from approval to being required. And it’s anyone’s guess how school districts will enforce such a statewide requirement. They barely enforce current requirements for children to get vaccines for mumps, measles and other much more communicable diseases. -- read full article

The two medical groups you’d think would be leading the campaign for vaccination, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, seem inclined to slow the mandatory vaccination train down. (The debate is playing out in at least 31 other states — in addition to Georgia and Texas — which is remarkable considering the vaccine was only approved for public use in June.) -- read full article

It seems to me...The facts about cervical cancer and the HPV virus are proving, that the pharmaceutical companies are using fear to generate profits for their HPV vaccine. And, it is working.

There are several reasons to consider whether the benefit of this vaccine outweighs the risks. And, there are even more reasons to argue against making this vaccine mandatory for 9 to 12 year old school girls. I view this latest consumer manipulation of the American public by the pharmaceutical companies, as the most appalling example of corporate greed I have ever seen. What do you think?

Over the last few months at least three of our BlogHer corresponding editors have addressed this Gardasil issue. Both the posts and the comments they generated are very interesting and compelling, so I wanted to give you the links; The People vs. Perry, More Thoughts on Gardasil, as a mom, and Gardisil - for HPV - for Cervical Cancer.

And, a quick surf through the BlogHer BlogRoll turned up a couple women bloggers covering this important issue as well. Lively Women have done several posts, and Our Bodies Ourselves did a very informative post with lots of links.
I know this is a very hot topic lately and that many of you have strong feelings on both sides of this issue...and I would like to hear them all. Also, if you have a blog and you have been posting on this important issue...I hope you will comment and leave a link to your post. Knowledge is power. The more facts and information we can gather in one place, the better prepared parents can be when they make this decision for their child.
