As luck would have it, I brought my new dog to work today. I just adopted him last night from a local dog rescue organisation and unpredictable events are taking me out of town for the weekend. Rather than criss-cross the city a few times before hitting the road, I brought Peanut along.

It's provided great bonding time. Even just sitting next to me while I work gets him accustomed to a new presence. Plus he's a hit with my office mates.

Unfortunately, I don't think this will be a regular office occurance since the bosses (who are away) frown upon such visits. It's too bad because I've always found that having dogs in the workplace soothing, and not as distracting as one may think. (Although I can appreciate allergy issues).

If you're heading to an office today, you might want to throw some dog treats into your lunch bag. It's Take Your Dog to Work Day, courtesy of Petsit.com and Purina Jumbone.

So what's this all about? Just a chance to show off Molly or Scooter or Jake? Or an opportunity to drive all of your allergic co-workers to a day of sick leave? Not quite.

According to Petsit.com, the day is just as much about raising awareness of the need for rescue homes for adoptable dogs as it is about making sure your dog has fun at work. They say "It's a day for pet sitters, animal shelters and businesses of all sizes (to) come together to recognize the great companions dogs make...Dogs go to work. Hearts are touched. And as a result, homeless dogs will be adopted."

Jen at Fuzzle, " a blog of San Diego adoptable pets" agrees, and encourages the practice:

I have worked at a number of places that allowed folks to bring their fuzzy companions in some days of the week and it was always a win/win thang.

Anne Robinson at Think Anne: Adventures in Real Estate says:

We all love our furry friends, and so much so that we hope you will join us for a new opportunity to have some personal fun, gather a little assistance and knowledge, and help each of our local animal shelters to serve our communities better. The national, annual â€œTake Your Dog To Work Dayâ€ is set for Friday, June 22.

Whether you and your company truly bring your personal pets in that day, or generously gather donations of canned wet and dry dog or cat food, paper towels, wet wipes, newspapers, pooper scoopers, treats, toys, litter and litter boxes or MONEY, you can all be a part of the fun and help your local animal shelter.

Burrito giant Chipotle is one company that takes its pet-friendly policy seriously. They only agreed to lease new digs in downtown Denver after the developer agreed to amend the lease to allow dogs in the building.

"On any given day, we have at least a few dogs here, and as many as 18 or 20 on a busy one," (Chipotle spokesperson Chris) Arnold said. "We have done things like a Halloween party where we dress the dogs in costumes. That really packs them in."

AOL's Animal Hubbub is pretty quiet, but nonetheless offers this photo of Zeke ready to hop in the briefcase,

These are programs that can be replicated all year long, and not just on one particular day. I'll be posting more specifics later today. We're a little late to get on the ball (or to donate some - tennis balls are a huge hit in my house!) for this special day, but there are 364 other chances to spend quality time with animals. That means one who already lives in the literal lap of luxury with you, or one of the millions who still need to find a forever home.
