I just found out that Jumpstart is doing its annual Read for the Record. They're asking folks to donate funds to help purchase copies of The Story of Ferdinand for underprivileged children.

I think that would be a worthy part of any summer reading challenge -- passing on a love of reading to disadvantaged kids!

I saw your comment first thing this morning and clicked to reply, but I try NOT to reply here 'til I have at least some work done, so now I'm back! ;-)

I read a lot, people make a lot of comments about just how much I read, but your goal scares the heck out of me! I am so anxious to see if you can do it!

My partner, on the other hand, said "so, that's not a lot" when I told her your goal. She reads more than I do and can probably hit 45 in 30 which frightens me even more because I live with her and it has somehow become my responsibility to keep her stocked with library books! ;-)

30 in 30, wow. Amazing.

A Great Idea

I've never participated in an official reading challenge, but in a certain way, we've set up our own over at Fringe. We were feeling kind of angry about the New York Times list of the top 25 books of the last 25 years (Only 2 women! Only 1 writer of color!). So we decided to make our own. But in order to vote in our contest, you have to read a couple books written by non-white, non-straight, non-males. So that's our reading challenge for ourselves and our readers -- to seek out quality fiction that is written by non-mainstream writers!

I wonder if I could do that. The best I've ever done is 28 books in 31 days. And well, that was last summer when I had evil upstairs neighbours and spent all my time in my apartment hiding from them.

Right now I'm doing a year long A-Z Challenge. (Hmm that needs to be updated, I know I read at least one more book on that list.) So is Contributing Editor Denise.

Summer Reading Challenges Everywhere

And boxes, boxes everywhere. I'm packing and it sucks. After weeks of procrastinating it hit me that I'm moving to a new city in less than two weeks and I might want to actually pack or something. But now that I've reached the point where I need to do dishes or clean or do laundry in order to pack things I figure it's time to procrastinate again. I stopped and wondered what I was doing this time last year. A summer reading challenge of course! Unfortunately due to the move and various other factors I am not officially participating in any official challenges this summer.

Amanda, who was responsible for the challenge I took part in last summer, created another challenge for this summer. You can keep on what people are reading at the Summer Reading Challenge Blog.

Mysteries your thing? Reviewed by Liz has a Summer Mystery Reading Challenge. It started June 1 and is running until August 31. The blog is featuring a different mystery author everyday. It's a great opportunity to find new authors.

Maggie Reads started a Southern Reading Challenge. She wants to bring this genre to a whole new spectrum of readers.

Now you'll notice that these challenges are in progress. What's a reading blogger to do? Create your own challenge of course! That's what Get Lit did. Hmmm no buying books until she reads at least 5 on her shelf...good challenge. I would consider it but I have a very good reason for not buying books right now - I'd have to pack them.
