Waxing is my personal nemesis...

Despite my blog title, I don't always write about pubic hair, but Brazilian waxes really creep me out for so many reasons. And Smith gives me some great new ammo for my personal Campaign. Thanks so much for sharing the link!

On bikini waxes

I was shocked to read something recently that mentioned that there is bleeding involved in a Brazilian wax. Gross!

On bikini wax dangers and breast cancer risks: two PSAs from a science blogger

I learn so damn much from academic bloggers that I'm perpetually in their debt. Some of this debt has to do with career issues, but I've also learned an awful lot about health (physical, mental, and emotional) from these bloggers.

I wanted to share two of the latest reports from Tara C. Smith's epidemiology blog Aetiology.

First up, a possible connection between breast cancer and being a night owl. Smith reports on research by Richard Monastersky that links growing rates of breast cancer with the process of industrialization. Since industrialization also tends to bring better sanitation and safer food, the prevalence of many varieties of cancer decreases. And yet breast cancer rates in industrialized nations are five times that in the developing world. Our exposure to electric light may explain, at least in part, the higher breast cancer risk in industrialized countries.

Second, Smith lets us know about a new report on the dangers of bikini waxes:

The August issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases has a forthcoming article that details (very carefully details, so squeamish, beware) what can happen with a bikini wax gone bad--and it's every bit as bad as you think.

It's a hair-raising (no pun intended) blog post, and it should be required reading for anyone who frequents beauty salons for any kind of treatment, including manicures and facials.

Pass along news of these dangers, please.

Leslie Madsen-Brooks, a recovering academic and an fledgling academic technologist, blogs at The Clutter Museum, Museum Blogging, and Green West Magazine.
