Peru Quake Kills Hundreds

Officials in Peru say a 7.9-magnitude earthquake centered off the coast has killed at least 337 people with thousands hurt.

Reports indicate the quake lasted two-minutes and was followed by a 1-foot tsunami and strong aftershocks.

Christine writes, "So, we had a few frantic hours last night. An earthquake with a magnitude 7.9 on the Richter scale hit just south/southeast of Lima, Peru last night. there were a few smaller earthquakes later in the evening and a bunch of aftershocks, too. Renzo and I were just getting home when his sister called to let us know. We haven't been able to talk to Renzo's Mom, Perla, as of yet. But Renzo was online last night and asked one of his BF2 buddies who lives in Peru to call his mom's house to make sure they are ok. He talked to Perla's BF, Luis, and they are ok. But we still haven't had a chance to talk to her. International calls are not going thru right now. We are waiting for her to contact us."

Lixie says, "My sister's in southeastern Peru. Further inland, but still. I'm sure she's felt the aftershocks. My family hasn't heard from her yet. I kind of doubt we will for a bit but I'm sure she's okay. Or at least, that's what I'm telling myself."

Hannah writes, "my stepmom and sister were in peru last night during the earthquake. they're okay, thank god. i've never felt more scared, hearing that there was an earthquake there and over 300 people were killed. RIP to everyone who died last night."

Angela's Babble festival writes, "a couple of days ago I blogged about having a funny feeling of something horrible is coming. This morning I awoke to hear about Lima, Peru having a 7.5 earthquake killing 337 people and injuring at least 1,350 people. I suspect that to grow or the number of dead to grow."
