BlogHer Health Round-Up

One of the most interesting things about being a Health & Wellness Contributing Editor at BlogHer is checking out new (to me) blogs that are added to the BlogHer Blog List every day. There are tons of them and I really do visit them all, at least once, and a lot of them I subscribe to immediately. Here are some of my recent favorites, are they your favorites too?

Have you seen Brass and Ivory? It's written by a professional musician who is advocating for changes in health care. Check out a post about health insurance.

As a self-employed person, I purchase health insurance in the private individual market. Premiums for an underwritten policy for a 38-year old woman in the Washington, D.C. area, cost me $3384 annually (up 20% from last year) with self-employment tax adding $478 to the total cost. This "managed-care" PPO plan features $25 doctors' visit copays, 10% coinsurance, a low $100 in-network deductible, and includes prescription coverage. Several presidential candidates are promoting increased participation in the individual health insurance market. That would mean many more americans would have coverage similar to my own. However, last year my health care expenses exceeded $15,000 out-of-pocket in addition to the cost of insurance premiums, with an adjusted gross income of $19,417 and total taxes due of $4761. I am forced by the current free-market system to keep my earnings below 200% federal poverty level in order to qualify for assistance in obtaining a single MS medication costing $21,000 annually. That's no freedom of choice!

LJ at Looking for 2 Lines just put $23K on her credit card.

I had a someone exhilarating experience today. I got to use my credit card to make a purchase of $23,000. I have signed my ovaries away to my RE for the next two years. As I wrote yesterday, AF showed up, so this is the beginning of what I am hoping is the home stretch.

Frances is a health freak and tells us why she does yoga every day.

I think my sudden change to regular yoga practice was due to the right combination of things, although this combination wasn’t particularly that pleasant. Probably the main motivation was learning a new bandha. Without going into any detail, a bandha is a particular yoga ‘position’ that is part of a yoga routine. This bandha in particular was a goal for me. I knew we were learning it soon so I decided to make the day we learnt it the day I started practicing yoga every day. And I did.

Anita has a great blog about juvenile diabetes, (both of her daughters have been diagnosed with this.) Her post about Insulin Edema is a great example of the information she shares.

Here's one of those little known juvenile diabetes symptoms: insulin edema.

In rare cases a patient will develop edema after starting to take insulin. Puffy feet, swollen legs and bloating in the abdomen can occur. This is due to insulin's ability to retain sodium and water. Hair loss is a symptom too.

My daughter was diagnosed with diabetes a month ago and developed edema almost immediately. She still has it and started using an over the counter diuretic a couple of days ago.

Dr. Leigh Ann Simmons writes about PMS at Women's Health Matters.

Periods are bad enough without adding premenstrual agonies to the front end. You know what I'm talking about - the bloating, breast tenderness, irritability, fatigue, acne, crying spells, anxiety, and food cravings (chocolate, salt, both - do I hear chocolate covered pretzels anyone?) that occur a week or so before your period arrives.

Give these blogs a peek and share any new health blogs you feel worthy of sharing with us.
