The assertion is that "a woman may think she wants to end a pregnancy, may even feel relief when she does, but she will suffer for it later. So the state has a duty to stop her".The U.S. Supreme Court cited this reasoning, that the government needs to protect women from themselves, last year in upholding a ban on a late-term abortions.

depressing and motivating

the range of issues confronting today's feminists is staggering - simultaneously depressing and motivating. this is a great reminder that we cannot ever be complacent.

people may say feminism is dead. i say it's needed now more than ever. because I can't conceive of depending on anyone but women to stand up for ourselves, in times like these.

Around the Dial: South Dakota, Summers resigns, Science, and VW

"Are you super-connected?" Switch on the feminist blog wires with this latest issue of "around the dial".

South Dakota's state abortion ban

Jill of team-blog Feministe: "[The legislation] offers no exception for the pregnant woman's health - if giving birth is going to cause massive kidney damage which will likely kill her after childbirth, no exception. If giving birth is going to force doctors to perform a hysterectomy, no exception. If the fetus has such a severe birth defect that it will die before, during or immediately after birth, no exception…"

Bitch Ph.D., Forecast: Frigidity in South Dakota: "I predict that poor and principled women in South Dakota will start learning how to do at-home d&cs. I also understand that cocaine and/or throwing yourself downstairs can often induce a miscarriage."

Terry of I See Invisible People notes the similarity between T-Rex and South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds: "Who needs an extinct destroyer when you have a living, breathing one in the governor's mansion?" Written in April of last year, her post provides prescient commentary on current news.

Lawrence Summers resigns

Jessica Valenti of team-blog Feministing: "Lawrence Summers has resigned as president of Harvard University… Summers is best known in feminist circles as the dipshit who said perhaps women were 'naturally' worse at math and science."

Angry for a Reason: "Now anyone with a brain (I don't include Summers here) knows that boys and men are given preferential treatment in our schools, and that biologically 2 X chromosomes versus an X and a Y chromosome have no bearing on how good you will do in math and science."

Angry for a Reason also points to a post written by Cosmic Variance, segueing neatly into our next section.

Women in Science

Cosmic Variance, The wrong side of history: "What a depressing exercise to poke a finger into the turgid world of pseudo-scientific rationalizations for inequality that people will believe so that they can feel better about themselves." (Read on for an uplifting conclusion.)

The True Confessions of an Hourly Bookseller, Face Up and Sing: "I knew that science belonged to me in a way that it didn't belong to most girls, but I learned that it was not mine in quite the same way that it belonged to guys like my dad. Girls who see magic in the fact that oranges are literally made out of sunshine, rain and wind don't mix well with the serious face of science. They are, however, tolerated - even at times revered - in the arts and humanities."

The Volkswagen Advertisement

Arse Poetica, I Hate the New VW Campaign: "The main emphasis of the ads seems to be, 'Shut up/Go away, girl. You're getting in the way of my good time.' The car's performance is merely hinted at by revving noises, a dork behind the wheel, and a toy devil robot with a deep voice saying something unintelligible. The 'performance' of which Mr. Bogusky is so enamored is less the car's and more a professed freedom—of car ownership (mobility), the open road (unfettered past), and a sort of masculine 'right of way,' which is, let's face it, a rejection of the feminine (not to put too fine a point on it). It is sexist, misanthropic, and passe."

Echidne of the Snakes, Volkswagen - The Sexist Car: "The reason for these ads is the fact that VWs are seen as girly cars in the U.S., and the company wants to have more men as customers… Do they really think that they can run ads dissing women without losing their women customers?"
