Tire Pressure Monitoring

One way to greatly improve on our 'green driving' is to start paying more attention to Tire Pressure Monitoring. Americans wasted over 2 BILLION gallons of fuel due to low tire pressure last year alone. That is a huge amount of, quite frankly, unneccesary waste, not to mention the debris on our roadways and landfills that could be reduced...... let me explain futher. Low tire pressure is the leading cause of blowouts, and causes premature wear on your tires. By properly monitoring your tire pressure, you can extend tire life (in fact it has been estimated we can reduce 1/3 of the tires going to landfills) and help prevent blowouts (as blowouts generally result from the slow break down of tires over time due to the extra bending and flexing allowed by inproper inflation).

Just a bug for everyone's ear. You can find more about proper tire inflation all over the internet. Some good links are from the DOT and Firestone, or we have presentations available for you at PressurePro's website at www.advantagepressurepro.com.

Green Travel and Goods, The Beeb Gets Lonely, The Top Ten Temples

Via Globorati, a blog I can barely stand to look out, so tempting are the destinations, a story about Climate Tourism. Climate tourism is a sort of "see it now before it's gone" way of thinking, or for the more cynical, a "see exactly what impact all those long haul flights are having on teh big nature near you!" Okay, those are both my interpretations. Globorati makes no such claims, but it is an interesting spin on eco-tourism.

Sort of related to that (okay, it's a stretch, but bear with me) is this post on Intelligent Travel about EcoDriving. This European program is...

“is a way of driving that reduces fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and accident rates." It establishes basic driving etiquette such as winding up windows to reduce drag, regularly checking tire pressure, and maintaining a steady speed.

I'm not sure why we're not EcoDriving here in the US, but there's no reason you can't especially on that upcoming road trip to see the in-laws for Thanksgiving, right? The current pages of Intelligent Travel are full of green travel news - rental bikes, green Beijing for the games, sustainable travel - have a look.
Jamble's gone green too with posts about eco-friendly products for travelers and hey, look, it's Fairtrade Month! How did I not know this?

October is Fair Trade month in the USA - an entire month dedicated to promoting the benefits of the Fair Trade movement.

Here at Jamble we have always supported Fair Trade in the office - we only use Fair Trade coffee, sugar and when we want treat ourselves, Fair Trade chocolate too!

In other huge news for travelers, the BBC recently bought Lonely Planet, the battered bible of backpacker's everywhere. Road Junky has nothing nice to say about this transaction.

The problem with selling out is not that the Wheelers gave into the lure of a large income – anyone could fall for that – but that the world became yet another item for sale. The inherent paradox in the guidebook market is that whether the destination be a shit hole or not, the guidebook has to hype it up in order to sell copies. They can’t say, for instance:

‘Come to sunny Glasgow and get beaten up by smackheads on industrial estates before being used as a football by steel workers returning from the pub‘.

Travel Babel also posts on the Beeb's new baby.

I always imagine myself to be a Lonely Planet type of traveler -- adventurous, fearless, independent. I'm probably not. The Wheelers are -- and the suits on Fleet Street or wherever probably aren't. I hope the BBC doesn't ruin it.

Finally, because it's Monday and a good day for gorgeous photos, here are Neatorama's Top Ten Temples. I've been to two, to my amazement, and the I'll visit the third this winter. Only seven more to go.

Pam blogs about travel and other adventures at Nerd's Eye View. She's spending November writing a guidebook to Hawaii. In Hawaii..
