Use Stumbleupon and Mixx

I've found using both of these networks helps in finding people with common interests, webmasters who are interested in cross promoting each others' sites, and people willing to vote for article submissions. Certainly doesn't hurt traffic volume when you submit interesting and topical articles there.

Plurk

Hi,

I am a newbie to this world of blogging, and I recently discovered Plurk.

www.plurk,com.

I think you can search for me under Schrot

I like the visual aspect of it. I am not sure it is very widely used in the US. I found it via an Australian blog so maybe it is popular there. It is kinda cool.

Liz

come on, it's gonna be fun ... www.queenofwonder.com

Kirtsy

Does anyone have any experience with www.kirtsy.com? I signed up, but I'm new to social networking, so I was a little confused. I heard it was a good site for women, but I posted a couple of articles and didn't get any hits.

Entrecard, and Social Spark

The only two I use are Entrecard, and Social Spark. Social Spark I dont think helps to generate traffic, but I can take paid assignments to blog about on my blog. Entrecard, on the other hand I love. Its kind of like having a credit card for traffic. After you sign up, verify, add your blog or blogs, you drop your entrecard on other users blogs. They in turn drop their card on your blog. Some actually even read your material, and leave comments. You save up your entrecard points, and then you can cash them in to advertise your blog on their website. It is actually pretty great. I have tried some of the others, and honestly I just dont have the time for all that socializing.

Denise,

thank you for this informational forum. I tend to navigate towards you when I come to blogher because I appreciate what you bring to the table. I find you informative, advice giving and respectful of bloggers all around. I just wanted to throw that at you....:)

Thanks for the info on Facebook and the other gems you listed. I've just begun to network myself onto the blogging world and have no idea why it took me this long to even do it! You seem very comfortable in this and I only hope I send off that kind of energy as well! Please check out my website at www.debbieraymondpinet.com to view my books and latest work. Take care!

I Stumble with StumbleUpon

I get traffic through BlogCatalog. I belong to Digg and StumbleUpon but don't use them as well or effectively as I should. I Sutmble others but I find it difficult to find and Friend the blogs I read on a regular basis. (If you want to friend me on StumbleUpon I'm at http://condoblues.stumbleupon.com/inbox/).

There's also a time management issue with belonging and using so many social networking sites. How do you manage reading, posting, commenting, and friending on more than on site while finding the time to write your own blog, work, and do non computer activities in the real world?

Why don't decorating and DIY projects always work out like they do on TV? Condo Blues http://condo-blues.blogspot.com/

stumble upon

I'm on facebook, but don't really use it much. It takes too long too load for one, and there are too many annoying applications (especially if you're friends with your 18 year old daughter!). I have started interacting a bit on stumble upon. From what I've read, this can be a nice and active community. I've actually "met" a lot of helpful people on blogcatalog as well.

"Friend" me at stumble upon: http://witchqueen13.stumbleupon.com

my favorite social networking site

I just joined blogher today and have a site to recommend: tbd.com, an online hangout for people over 40. Frank, lively online discussions (everything from sex to politics) have given me ideas for both blog posts and magazine articles. My profile page lists my blog, and I've had a trickle of visitors from tbd (these people would never have found me otherwise). To get more traffic from the site, I'd either have to post there much more frequently (which would pull me away from my own site and other writing) or promote myself more aggressively. I've been pretty low key so far. The site works because people behave like their real selves, not like marketers. If you're part of the target demographic, check it out. Warning: you might get hooked.

It's true - to get consistent traffic you need to make a connection to other people. The way to do that is to become a part of their community and then they'll become a part of yours. It takes time and effort but it is well worth it - not just in terms of traffic, but in relationships as well.

MyBlogLog

I've found more blogs there (usually by checking what some of my favorite bloggers are reading) than had a traffic surge. It's hit or miss. Sometimes I get a handful of hits from MyBlogLog, mostly I get a couple a day.

All these things that are supposed to increase your blogs visibility haven't really worked for me, or not worked as well as I thought they would. The things that have worked:

Joining BlogHer :)
Getting named blog of the week in my local alternative newspaper
Getting linked on a more popular site
Leaving comments -- good comments -- on other blogs

Branching out

I just joined Blog Log to create more traffic to my sites. I orginally started with a Yahoo 360 blog, but with all the problems and confusion from all the changes going on there, I decided to create a wordpress blog and eventually replace 360 with that one. I have a myspace page to keep up with some friends, but I don't care for it too much. I don't get any traffic from myspace at this point. I joined this site for the reading! But I'm hesitant to join too many groups because I don't want to spend my days maintaining a lot of sites. I've found that if I don't visit a site on a regular basis and update, people stop visiting...for obvious reasons! One of the more effective ways I've found to bring people to my pages is to find blogs I really like and just comment on their blogs. Then people visit my blog, and if they really like it, they put it on their blogroll....

Tip: Social Networking Sites

I belong to just about every site that falls into the "social networking" category. I have no idea why I belong, besides the fact that it's been my job to check these out. The only three I really use at all are Twitter, Facebook, and Linked In but I don't use them effectively and I'm not sure they help my blogging at all, though I can see how they might.

Do you belong to social networking sites? Do you use the services? Do they help you come up with blogging ideas? Do you get any blog traffic from your participation in social networking sites?

Also, would you like to join the BlogHer groups on Linked In and Facebook? Or follow BlogHer on Twitter?

Linked In (When you join, it may take me 24 hours to approve your request. Be patient with me, please!) http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/28615/4AAC1422F311

Facebook:
Blogher: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2428869003
BlogHers Act: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2470423117
BlogHers Act Canada: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2510136321

Twitter:
