My apologies. It isn't clear from the blog post, but now I see a link on the blog to your web site at Georgetown U that I didn't find before when I was checking out your blog. Sorry for misrepresenting you.

I'm glad to learn that we have a law professor in our midst. I've subscribed to your feed!

Thanks for the mention, but I'm actually a professor, not a student any more.

Yours,

find the one that will keep me from wallowing in the bakery case of the new Flying Star (http://www.flyingstarcafe.com/) that opened down the road from my house.

I happen to be something of an expert on all of those online weight loss programs. (Not something I generally advertise since I really dislike diets in general.) If readers have specific questions about any of them, I'm happy to help if I can.

Summer jobs, high tech weight loss, and e-book readers

Google is looking for a few good students interested in public policy. The Google Policy Fellowship program is taking applications for summer fellowships. It's a paying, 10-week job that sounds like an exciting and interesting way for a student to spend the summer.

The Google Policy Fellowship program offers undergraduate, graduate, and law students interested in Internet and technology policy the opportunity to spend the summer contributing to the public dialogue on these issues, and exploring future academic and professional interests.

This information caught the eye of law student Rebecca Tushnet at 43(B)log who explained,

Google Policy Fellowship, funding ten weeks of work on undergraduate, graduate, and law students interested in Internet and technology policy at places in San Francisco and Washington, DC, including the American Library Association, Cato Institute, Center for Democracy and Technology, Competitive Enterprise Institute, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Internet Education Foundation, Media Access Project, New America Foundation, and Public Knowledge.

Information about how to apply is here. Good luck to the BlogHers in universities who might be interested in this job.

I don't know about you, but I've gotten a little concerned about my weight lately. I've watched my blood pressure and my bad cholesterol inching upward with my weight as I've slowly gained back the pounds I lost about 8 years ago when I became a lifetime member of Weight Watchers. I've been trying to kick myself into gear again to get rid of the offending pounds and get back to a weight that doesn't include an alarming fat-to-muscle ratio. I keep telling myself I'll find a Weight Watchers meeting place and start going. So far it hasn't happened.

Then this week's issue of Newsweek Magazine contained an article about online weight loss sites. The Newsweek writer, Joan Raymond, even indicated that the sites work for some people. OK, so she had my attention. Such sites offer advice, recipes, peer support, dietitians who set up individual programs and physical activity tracking systems.

It seems even Weight Watchers have an online area with interactive tools, strategies and recipes for people like me who can't seem to get out the door to a meeting. But Weight Watchers has plenty of competition from sites that don't have a real world component, they exist only in cyberspace. Here are a few choices.

- eDiets
- Diet.com
- WebMD Weight Loss Clinic
- South Beach Diet
- Curves Complete

The Newsweek article also pointed to some online places to check out these various programs who all want your bucks to help you lose weight. Two are Consumer Reports and Top Ten Reviews.

What about reviews of these sites by bloggers? Sarah at Healthy Weight Loss Now reviewed eDiets.com.

Once again we have a good example of a polarizing diet. Some people love eDiets.com and want to spread the word, while others loathe it and vow to spread the word. It’s the clash of dieters over who’s right and who’s wrong about this program. While this is also the case with many other diets, eDiets.com has been particularly good at annoying both existing and prospective customers due to their “creative” approach to billing. However, this problem is not related to the dieting itself and if you don’t mind spending some cash, you might have a very good dieting experience.

The really good part of the diet is the flexibility. eDiets.com is based on the idea that different people need different approaches to dieting and strives to provide alternatives. Those who cannot stick to the eDiets.com eating plan are free to choose the Atkins, The Zone or other eating plans, which are included in the eDiets.com website. Some people find it better to go with a combination of eating plans or simply to make up their diet as they go. We are all different beings so this is a very good idea. On the other hand, dieters don’t get a lot of information on which foods are good and which are bad outside the eating plan.

Karen at Mommy of Three talked about her plan to succeed in staying healthy over the coming holidays. She mentioned liking Weight Watchers, but pointed out a site that offers coupons for the foods from various diet places.

There is a site, Weight Loss Diet Help, that compare many of the popular weight loss programs, and offers Medifast, Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers promotion codes and discount coupons. You can select the program that best suits your individual needs and fits your goals, and learn some tips and tricks. Since I am such a picky eater, I personally prefer Weight Watchers, because I can customize my point plan according to foods that I will actually eat, and earn extra points through exercise. It is important to eat enough calories so that you have energy and stay healthy, but not eat too many so that your body can't burn them all.

Do you love high-tech gadgets? I certainly do. Well here's one that might be a nice Christmas gift for the person who loves books and high tech gadgets. CNET News announced that, come Monday, Amazon is going to debut a new e-book reader called Kindle. Kindle will cost about $400, and allow you to wirelessly download books from—where else?—amazon.com. Amazon is launching its new product with lots of hype and razzle-dazzle, so watch for more information in the news about this potential tech toy in the next few days.
