Green Holiday Tips

I've found some cool Holiday tips that are environmentally friendly in ExpoTV's Holiday Survival Guide (http://www.expotv.com/holiday/survival/Survival-Tips/220/198570). They show you how to recycle your Christmas tree and where to find cards made from recycled paper.

Recycled gift wrap

Another idea for gift wrap is old maps. I don't mean the antique kind, but just outdated road maps, country maps, or world maps. New roads, new countries, or just dated maps make great Christmas gift wrapping.

Once a month, a local library used to sell outdated maps for $.10 each. Many people just have old maps in a closet collecting dust. You'd be surprised the conversations that can start from this unique gift wrap.

Eco gift wrapping, from box to ribbon

Giving green gifts this season? Stay green with the presentation too. Make that gift look pretty, without buying a ton of new wrapping paper, gift boxes, and ribbons. Here's how to wrap a gift eco-style:

Need a box for your gift? Gift boxes are one of the easiest things to reuse -- I keep a small stockpile under my bed, throwing new ones into the stash as presents come in. But if you run out of those, or just want to get creative, turn cereal boxes into gift boxes. Give your gifts a whole new stylish shape -- using all post-consumer content materials!

To wrap your gift, flip through those old magazines and rip out pages that'll look cool as wrapping paper. I tend to stick to all black and white images for my mag wrapping, but pages with seasonally appropriate color schemes might be another good way to go. Summer of BTC Elements likes this method; her mag of choice is Rolling Stone.

Another good wrapping material: Maps you no longer need. I got this idea at my local transit store, where gift boxes were wrapped with colorful Big Blue Bus maps and schedules.

Reusable gift bags can be in themselves a gift that keeps on giving, as Jasmin at Planet Green points out. If you're crafty, make your own; if not, follow the links in Jasmin's post to purchase some pretty ones that'll hopefully be used for years to come.

If nothing will do but traditional wrapping paper, the Green Girl Gift Wrap's a greener way to go. Get your 100% recycled wrapping paper printed with soy ink by an FSC-certified printer. (via Low Impact Living)

For that last decorative touch, reuse the ribbons you've hopefully been saving up since last year. If you need more, take Danny Seo's advice in his book Simply Green: Giving and take the ribbon out of old VHS tapes! That might be an especially fitting and popular option for film-related gifts --
