A great velvet blazer over a cashmere turtleneck -- I've been trying to talk my husband into wearing that for YEARS.

With no luck, by the way. Sigh.

Men in velvet jackets

I was at a party in the Hollywood Hills last weekend and two guys - one gay, one straight, showed up with basically the same dark brown velvet jacket. It was a casual male cut with no frills, just the velvet - very yummy on both of them!

The velvet jacket, for the holidays and beyond

Perhaps ten years ago, I read an article in Vogue magazine about the I-have-nothing-to-wear dilemma. The problem, according to one stylist profiled in the article, is that most of us are only wearing about a third of what we own; we segregate our closets into Work and Weekend and Special Occasion, and we NEVER cross the lines between categories.

Velvet Bella jacket, J. Crew, $158.00

There are some pieces -- an evening gown, for example -- that lend themselves to categorization; honestly, you're not going to run to the market in a full-length silk dress. But other pieces -- suits and jeans and shoes with wee heels -- are equally appropriate for work and weekend and everything in between.

The velvet jacket is a good example of this.

Rosalie velvet jacket, J. Jill, currently on sale for $79.99

Velvet is luxurious and festive; it is perfect for holiday parties, because it is so easy to wear. Go with basic black, which is sleek and classic, or with bright colors, which are dramatic and fun. Look for traditional blazer shapes or funky cuts that play up your best assets. No matter what the cut or color, a velvet jacket can carry you through the winter, and can be worn easily for every day.

Alfani velvet jacket, Macy's, currently $79.50

For dressy occasions, pair your velvet jacket with wool trousers or a wool skirt; wear it over your little black dress, or over a silk blouse or cashmere sweater (for colder climates). For casual days, pair with jeans and a tee or a simple merino wool sweater. Add a great necklace and some cute shoes and you have a stylish casual look that is appropriate for everyday.

One-button velvet jacket, Ann Taylor Loft, $119.00

Who else is working the velvet jacket?

Kasmira shows us five ways to wear ONE jacket.

Wardrobe 911 tells us how to wear a velvet jacket (and uses the SAME J. Crew jacket I have here as an illustration -- so funny!).

Fashionista confesses that velvet makes her a little nauseous. And she livens up her post with a great photo of Rupert Grint in a velvet blazer.
