Running Out of the House?

Thinking about running out to a holiday party, networking event or meeting at the last minute?

We've all done it before...completely forgotten an engagement, meeting, party or lunch date that we promised to be at. So we spend a half hour trying to make it look like we took two hours to look like we took no time at all to look fabulous.

Have a spare outfit somewhere in your closet that may not be your favorite, but is from this decade. A simple business casual outfit can go a long way. If you keep a spare always pressed and clean, you will know where it's at and be able to dress for your occasion in record time.

Don't try for full makeup. Unless you were a MAC makeup artist in a past life (or in this one) don't try to do a full makeup regimen in ten minutes. Your eyeliner will end up crooked and people will think you have a black eye. While a black eye story may make a great conversation opener, people will still wonder if you're violent (come on, it's like when you tried to tell someone that hickey was a "curling iron burn" - they all knew you were lying!) Simple mascara and lip gloss will get you through the event no problem. What? No foundation! People know you're not 16, really, it's okay to own up to it once in a while.

Keep mints or one of those adorable little hotel bottles of mouthwash in your car/purse. You never know when you're going to have the "forgot to brush my teeth" moment. I'm not proud of it, but hey, I've been there too. I always make sure to collect the bottles of mouthwash from any hotel I stay at, and then keep one in my purse at all times! You'd be amazed at how fast I go through one (no, I'm not drinking them...) but when I have a lunch with garlic, or if I've got that halfway through the day and skipped lunch empty tummy mouth taste, which is just completely icky, it's come through for me like a champ.

What to do with your hair? That varies from person to person, so I can't tell you what to do with yours. But you know that one quick and easy thing you do with your hair when you're going out to shop? Do that. Seriously, even if it looks less than great, everyone will at least assume you meant to do that and just think you could have better taste in haircuts. As long as you're not a hairdresser...is that such a big deal? Whatever you do, don't decide to plug in a curling iron or the hot rollers if you're running late. Really, even if you throw your hair back in a ponytail, it isn't going to make or break your reputation.

Unless you have a "curling iron" burn on your neck...because we all know what that really is....
