I've got my eye on the categories one and I'd really love to do it but I don't think it's going to happen.

I love your categories. For the French books... are we talking books actually in French or translations? On my left from summer 06 list I have "read a book in French".

changed my mind

Your comment about ‘x’ made me re-think the whole, a-z thing. i’ve decided to do the categories one. It’s more reading but it also gives me more flexibility. Most importantly, it will motivate me to read some of the books I have been reading for a long time.

My categories are: women authors, french books, mysteries, series, prize winners, books recommended by friends/family and non-fiction.

p.s.: Left the same comment over at your book club. Hope that isn't a violation of netiquette...;-)

I *could* put my unreads

I *could* put my unreads into a spreadsheet......except I'm scared to find out exactly how many books I have in my place! I think it's somewhere in the 1000 mark, but dont want to start trying to find out.

I'm trying to concentrate on actually reading the books and getting rid of them, and then maybe - just *maybe*! - look at keeping details of the new ones I bring in.

(this is the problem of being a bookcrosser - too little time, too many books!)

About two or three years ago. I realized that I hadn't read many Canadian books as an adult and that seemed a shame seeing I was Canadian and all. So I tackled a few of the "classics". And then fall rolled around and here in Canada that's a bit time for literary awards. So I started reading the short listed books. I found some terrific books that I probably never would have found on my own.

Here's a link to the National Book Awards site. It lists the winners and nominees. Maybe it will get some ideas flowing for you. :)

Then at the end of the year I catalogued all my unread books into a spreadsheet (told you I love spreadsheets lol) as an exercise to help me stop buying books. I realized that I actually do have a number of themes popping up there that I didn't see just by looking at the books on my shelves. You never know, you might surprise yourself!

I've been doing your goal #1 for the last two years and I have to say, when I sit down at the end of the year and tally everything up it makes me feel like I've really done something over the course of the year. And it's fun to see how certain topics catch my interest some years. :)

Summer Challenge

The last few years there has been a Summer Reading challenge. And there are new ones popping up all the time. The challenges are fun because you sort of get the community of a book club but without everyone having to read the same book.

But if you can't find any that fit to your wants this summer make your own. Book bloggers really can't resist a good challenge. ;)

inspiring me to do something that I've always thought I should do: read more American authors! I always feel like I have good background in the classics of many European literatures, but not a good background in the classics of my own country!

Thanks for the break down, good to see that other people set challenges for themselves over their reading. (people reading, yay!).

I have far too many books, few on any particular theme, to do any of the challenges above apart from "From the stacks" and "TBR". I might be able to do the Austen challenge though!

My only goals last year is to

1) Track the number of books I read this year
2) Try and write a decent review for each of them
3) Match or exceed the 129 books I read in 2007

I hated it but maybe you'll like it. I think you like math and science more than I do. heh. But yea, trust me. I am keeping an eye out for X books 'cause I've learned that you never know when you need them and not having them gets you stuck with Asimov.

Heh.

At least I only paid like $3 for it.

Setting Goals 2008

Thanks, nice summary. I've been looking at the book challenges, the Living Dangerously and TBR are quite tempting though I've never done a book blog challenge before.

I'm thinking I'll wait for summer challenges though because I have made a few resolutions that are non-book related and I want to give myself a chance to succeed at them first!

Good luck with finishing your A-Z Challenge.

If you find a good X title let me know.;)

I have read The Thirteenth Tale. The ones on my list that have links are the ones that I've read. :) The ones that are struck through are ones that I had to replace with a different title because of lack of library access.

The challenge with the categories is realllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyy tempting.

Awards Challenges

I haven't done an awards challenge in a really long time. The last couple of years the GG and the Gillers weren't very tempting to me. I may do a Charles Taylor (non-fiction) challenge if the books look tempting and if I'm able to get them from the library.

I really need to start going to the library. Sigh.

great post

I am tentatively planning an a-z (author and title)...I may not stick to the plan exactly but it sure is fun to make lists. I've also decided that something that was listed by title can be moved over to the author column if I need it to (if I read say, White Corridor and White Teeth). We'll see how it goes.

I am tempted by the TBR challenge but I do love to use the library and I also have some gift certificates....(I have been stretching them out...) so decided A-Z makes more sense.

And I shiver at the possibility of making my list....I already have the spreadsheet open and ready to go.

Oh and Sassymonkey? Read Thirteenth Tale so you can scratch it off your list. I had it out twice from the library and then finally bought it when travelling. I loved it!

Hmmm...maybe I should do the challenge with the categories....

Even the deciding is so much fun.

Setting Reading Goals: 2008 Reading Challenges

It's a shiny new year, sitting and waiting for us to fill it up with ideas and events. Many of us do that by listing resolutions or setting goals for how we want our year to shape up. Perhaps one of your goals for the year to read more books. As you know from Kristy's excellent Good Health-a-thon post if we want our goals to be successful it goes a long way if we make them S.M.A.R.T. Something that could help you on reading path is a reading challenge (or two or three...).

I love reading challenges. I especially love planning them. I love to sit there with the challenge before me and start a list (or spreadsheet as the case may be, I'm always looking for an excuse to create a spreadsheet). First I have to decide what kind of challenge I want to do. Sometimes one will just pop before you like a temptress beckoning you toward the dark side. Except these are books, there is no dark side. This time of year there are a ton of challenges out there (see below) so you can really pick one that meets your needs. Do you mostly read fiction and want to add some non-fiction to your reading life? Or vice versa? Do you want to explore a new-to-you genre of books? Do you want to a theme? Do you want to read more foreign authors? Do you have so many unread books in your house that it's starting to scare you and make you feel guilty any time you so much look at a bookstore because you know buying more books means you are either insane or addicted or both?

Not that I'd know anything about that last one. Ahem. Where were we?

Right then, once I have my challenge down I move on to thinking about what books I want to read that fit the challenge guidelines. There's usually at least a couple. Then I start looking at online bookstores and library catalogs too see what new books I can buy or borrow. Yes! Challenges are an excuse to buy books! (Unless you a like me and are trying to buy less books in 2008...) And then, and here's where things always get dangerous, I look to see what other bloggers are reading for the challenge. So I usually start off with a fairly long list that I then have to willow down. First dibs always go to books I own but haven't gotten around to reading (they will always, without fail, be the books that are read last or not at all during the challenge). Then I go to the books I can get to the library. And then it's to the books I have to buy. Because buying books for a challenge is a perfectly justifiable reason to buy books (unless of course you are doing a From the Stacks challenge...more on that in a minute).

So, I've got my challenge, I've got my plan, I've got my books. Now all you have to do is read them. And, believe it or not, this is the part where I fail. Repeatedly. To be perfectly honest I've never successfully finished a challenge I've started. But gosh darn it I do love planning them. So what I need to work on in 2008 is actually finishing the challenges I already started. I'm holding myself responsible for that. Last year I started an A-Z title challenge and gave myself a whole year to finish it. I read about half the books. While I've made all kinds of excuses for not finishing it a large part of it was that I simply didn't really try or put much effort into doing the reading. Sure, some of the book titles I did end up having to change post-relocation (new city sadly does not have the kick-ass library system my last did) but there are a fair number of books on that list that I own and didn't read. I did not commit to the challenge. But this year I will finish my A-Z and Summer 2006 (yes, that says 2006!) challenges I signed up for but did not finish. There. I've said it here. It will be done.

Note that one thing I said above is that I created my own personal reading challenge. If any of the challenges listed below don't rock your boat don't be afraid to form one to your own specifications. If you do blog about it and I know that others will join you, either by taking up your challenge or creating one of their own. We book people are joiners. For example, you could create your own From the Stacks challenge. The From the Stacks Challenge was the brainchild of Overdue Books. It has run the past two autumns. But if you were someone, say like maybe possibly me, and have a scary number of unread books sitting around your house maybe you could decide to read only from your stacks for the year. That's what Bookfool said she was going to do.

I'm making some substitutions because I also plan to read only from my TBR stacks - no buying in 2008. And, you believe I'll last an entire year without purchasing a book, right? Well, actually, there are some qualifications to that little personal goal, but we'll save that for another time.

She's using her own challenge of not buying books to complete other challenges out there. That sounds very...challenging. And BlogHer's very own Denise is challenging herself to a Printz Award Reading Challenge where she's going to read all the Printz award books - winners and honours! So don't be afraid to tailor things to what works best for your interests. If you don't like it, you won't do it.

And now that I've rambled on here, finally, is a list of challenges that start in January and run the whole year. Shorter term challenges are out there but there are so many challenges I simply couldn't list all those as well. Some of the challenges involve many books, some only a few. And I'm sure there are some I've missed. If so please add them in the comments!

My Year of Reading Dangerously - read authors or genres that intimidate you using their list or create your own! If you go with their plan it's 1 per month (with accompanying online discussions) until the end of the year. If it's your list, you set your own rules. Or you can do a mix of the two, reading along with their books some months and branching out on your own others.
