Great idea . .

to feature good food writing once a month.

I have to confess it made me feel a little sad to realize I only remembered one of these posts. Not that they aren't memorable; it's just that my life is so frantic, I'm always flying through blogs in my feed reader and not really stopping to enjoy the good writing.

Cooks with Quills: The January Edition

Each year, the food blog community nominates its favorite posts of the year, then takes a vote to determine the Post of the Year. Naturally -- so many food blogs, soooo many posts, such short memories -- recent posts and consistently good writers dominate the nominations. To balance the year and the writer pool during 2008, here on BlogHer, each month let's collect a handful of posts that represent great writing from great food blogs.

Here are my own contributions of the best writing from food blogs during January. But blog writers and blog readers, you too. Think back over January. What post moved you? called to you? made you think? changed your thinking? made you laugh? grabbed you at the first line? turned a memorable phrase? captured the rhythm of the month? If you have a contribution too, leave a comment with a link. And during February, watch. We'll look at Cooks with Quills each month.

Tea & Cookies ~ Breaking Up with Butternut, a Dear John letter to butternut squash
Excerpt: "Dear Butternut, You were my first, you know—the first squash I ever loved. I was reluctant to love you; I don’t have a trusting heart when it comes to squash. Too often in the past I had been disappointed by your brethren who proved too stringy or too soggy. I had given up on ever finding a squash to care for, but I took a chance on you—with your graceful neck and pretty orange color—and you never let me regret it."

The Perfect Pantry ~ Onions, and onion bhaji, about those who inspire our cooking
Excerpt: "Whenever I cook, I hear voices."

Mango & Ginger ~ Does food make us happy?, about the pressure of paying attention to food
Excerpt: "... I'm going through a little bit of foodie fatigue. There are too many options available to me right now, I think: too many ways to eat "ethically" (or unethically) - none of which are foolproof, too many new ingredients to try and recipes to explore and books to read and restaurants to review and culinary destinations to visit. So as much as I love a great meal, as much as sitting around a dining room table with friends is my favorite thing ever, and as much as I have a million little Proust's madeleine moments every day, I'm always left feeling like there's more to do."

A Blithe Palate ~ The Taste of Tamarind, about the American departure from Vietnam and the impact on Robert, a boy of 11
Excerpt: "The last time I ate tamarind was 1975. 'White Christmas' began playing on the radios. It was the signal that the evacuation of America personnel had begun. Once Robert's family realized that the fall of their country was imminent, they and thousands of others rushed towards the American Embassy. Marines fought to keep the gates closed against the panicked tide of people desperate for the freedom their side of the gate represented. Hands and arms reached towards them, imploring; native voices pleaded with them to open the gates."

Lucy's Kitchen Notebook ~ Piscining the Fridge, about cleaning the clutter that lives in our refrigerators
Excerpt: "I laughed like a banshee when Mother informed me over the phone nearly three weeks ago that she was 'clearing out the kitchen' instead of 'cleaning up the kitchen'."

Hog Wash ~ Whimper, about life lessons, about honorable endings, about a transition from chef to home cook, about so much more (Background: Jess wrote 365 recipes, one a day, in 2007. This post is Day 365.)
Excerpt: "I met T.S. Eliot in the twelfth grade, in a Boise High School classroom now probably used to teach my younger sister. It was sometime in late fall, I think. He just waltzed right in and plastered his poetry there on my English teacher’s wall, along with all the other literary graffiti Dr. Mooney had conned the school into allowing."

Don't forget. Look for great writing from food bloggers during February. Take mental note, bookmark the post, tag it "great writing" in Delicious. See you next month, quill in hand!

For the next while, BlogHer food editor Alanna Kellogg is focused on Pi Day and pie crusts as much as great writing.
