Super Tuesday Shaking Out

Well, it's gonna be a late night.

On the Democratic side, Barack Obama's won a handful more states than Hillary at this point, with Connecticut being a bit of a surprise for him. Hillary's camp is calling her win in Massachusetts, despite Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and the governor endorsing Obama, the "upset of the night." But Obama also earned buzz for picking up highly educated, high-income, white male voters in the Northeast, showing he has more broad appeal than some had previously thought. Looks like the Dems will likely continue to be neck-and-neck after tonight, with neither candidate having much of a reason to get out.

On the Republican side, everyone's talking about the fact that Mike Huckabee didn't get the memo that this was a two-man race after Florida. Mitt Romney's attempt to be the conservative alternative to McCain is fizzling in the South-- a must-get region for any conservative candidate. McCain's night has been decent, though the tally in Arizona was way to close for comfort, and illustrates serious problems he has with the base, even there.

We're waiting for Missouri and California on the Republican side (with Missouri leaning more and more toward McCain by the minute). Unless Mitt can pull off something huge in California, his candidacy is in deep trouble. Bottom line: McCain will be the front-runner after tonight whether conservatives like it or not, and both conservatives and McCain must bend a bit to make up and move voters in November.
