When my youngest turned three, she started preschool and I went grocery shopping by myself, for the first time in about five years.

The sense of calm and freedom that characterized that first shopping trip was so intense, that I haven’t been able to recreate it ever since. But I will always remember it.

Do you suppose Kim from the New York food blog Yummy Mummy was worrying about how to save money on groceries? I think not. Here are some snippets -- all illustrated with photos -- from a recent trip to Pathmark with mind-of-her-own Lucy and still-nursing Edie in tow.

"Notice Lucy is clutching an empty cardboard toilet paper roll that she lifted from the bathroom at Starbucks. It made the entire trip with us."

"We don't even get past the avocados before she tells me 'I want to poop in Pathmark, Mommy.'"

"More boredom. It's the calm before the storm. Still not out of aisle 1."

"Lucy performs an Irish step dance for shoppers while I bag the groceries. She is singing an Irish tune loudly and people are gathered around her smiling and looking at me approvingly."

It's an hilarious account of one mom who makes it home from the grocery store, with the help of firefighters and a Good Samaritan -- and thinks of pouring a drink herself at 10 in the morning.
