red leather and my vagina

"Because He Liked To Look At It" reminds me of the journey to self-acceptance that seems never ending for me. I cry as I remember a time that I believed a red leather couch more beautiful and palatable than my vagina.

I am growing to love and respect my vagina more each day, yet the process is not always easy or intuitive. However, over the years I have come to understand that my vagina can buy as many red leather couches as she wants.

"Can A Vagina Drive A Bus?"

Hi Denise,

That's the one that made me misty. Especially where she said:

I remember watching her in the wings of the stage in a friends arms,
knowing that she will grow up in a home where being a girl wasn’t
second best.

How cool is that?

As I may have mentioned, I have seen the VMs many many many times - the last time was Sunday before last - and I love all of the monologues. All of them.

And I love "Can a vagina drive a bus" - that's a fantastic post.

The Vagina Monologues On YouTube

In honor of the 10th Anniversary of V-Day and BlogHer's exclusive interview with the writer of "The Vagina Monologues" Eve Ensler, I was asked to focus this week's post on "The Vagina Monologues" on YouTube.

In the last ten years many productions of "The Vagina Monologues" have been performed all over the world and with the booming popularity of YouTube, it was only natural that many of those performances, large and small would end up there. I've been surfing them the last few days and found a few I thought were worth noting.<!--break-->

Since the most popular monologue on YouTube seems to be "My Angry Vagina," about a vagina upset with things like tampons, feminine cleansers and speculums, I thought I'd start with Yetta Young's version:

Here's a performance of "Because He Liked To Look At It," about a gal who couldn't appreciate her vagina until "he" did:

Of course there can't be a discussion about vaginas without discussing orgasms. Here are several "Different Types Of Orgasm Moans:"

There are also several short video clips of "Vagina Monologue" performers being interviewed after the show about their own vaginas. Here's Amanda:

There's also Lucy, Momma Grant, and Barbara.

For a man's point of view of "TVM", check out Rowland Keshena's blog at A Radical In Bermuda, where he talks about a performance he attended:

I did notice many of the men sitting around looking somewhat aghast, but they should have been, the play is all about female sexuality and
female empowerment. Now it didn't bother me because I was raised by a radical feminist and spent many days hanging out in town at the then Rape Crisis Centre, which is now the Women's Resource Centre, listening
to women about female empowerment and violence against women and the like, so I was raised in a world apart from most men in our society. But still, the play moved me greatly, not only because it was performed
excellently, but because of the content.

At the F-Word Online, Jenny Lee had this to say:

Even as the show made me chuckle and smile, as I felt uncomfortable and
stunned, I realized one thing: the red, pulsating, raw, vagina that
revealed itself to the audience in each story was not only a physical
part of the female body but a representation of womanhood, both
vulnerable and vital.

"Can A Vagina Drive A Bus?" That's the question one Mom asked over at The Trivial Pursuit Of Happiness when she discovered her two year old had learned the word vagina:

I’m surprised it took two years for Ella to pick up the word, since one of my favorite moments from the first year of Ella’s life was reading
the monologue “I was there in the room“(video not of me) for a production of the Vagina Monologues when she was 3 months old. I remember watching her in the wings of the stage in a friends arms, knowing that she will grow up in a home where being a girl wasn’t second best. Where she will know that she is capable of anything. Where the word ‘vagina’ won’t be shameful, because if we can’t even say the name of the body part, how can we begin to address the violence done to it?

"TVM" does have its detractors. For example, at The Scoop D'Arcy there's a very interesting post by Anne Gregory arguing against the performing of "TVM" at Notre Dame. In her post she puts forth many of the arguments people who have problems with the play bring up.

Personally, I haven't seen "TVM." Somehow I just never got around to it. But through the years I've seen so many clips of it, I feel like I have seen it. From that vantage point, it appears to me that "TVM" has provided a forum for women to educate themselves about their bodies while at the same time challenging them to speak up and speak out. What could possibly be bad about that?
