What does Sen. McCain think about a parent's right to homeschool

Kerry, well I remember the March 7 ruling by the Second Circuit Court. Here's an excerpt from SFgate.com, the Web site of The San Francisco Chronicle:

"A California appeals court ruling clamping down on homeschooling by parents without teaching credentials sent shock waves across the state this week, leaving an estimated 166,000 children as possible truants and their parents at risk of prosecution.

The homeschooling movement never saw the case coming.

"At first, there was a sense of, 'No way,' " said homeschool parent Loren Mavromati, a resident of Redondo Beach (Los Angeles County) who is active with a homeschool association. "Then there was a little bit of fear. I think it has moved now into indignation."

The ruling arose from a child welfare dispute between the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services and Philip and Mary Long of Lynwood, who have been homeschooling their eight children. Mary Long is their teacher, but holds no teaching credential.

The parents said they also enrolled their children in Sunland Christian School, a private religious academy in Sylmar (Los Angeles County), which considers the Long children part of its independent study program and visits the home about four times a year.

The Second District Court of Appeals ruled that California law requires parents to send their children to full-time public or private schools or have them taught by credentialed tutors at home."

Home School and education

As a home educating mom and McCain supporter, I'd like to hear his response to the recent kerfuffle in California about homeschooling. I'd also like for him to share with us his thoughts about educational freedom and home schooling.

Basically, "Mr. McCain, how will you support a parent's rights to determine a child's education? And specifically, do you support homeschooling as a valid educational choice that should be free from excessive government intrusion? What would you consider excessive government intrusion? What would you consider appropriate government regulation?"

Tax issues!

I'm a small business owner married to another small business owner. And this year, despite the best efforts of our accountant, we were absolutely CRUSHED by our tax burden. It is extremely frustrating to work so hard and feel like our own government is penalizing us for our productivity. I thought Huckabee's flat tax ideas looked appealing. What ideas does McCain have for lowering our tax burden and encouraging productivity?

And frankly, I'm eager to hear McCain (hopefully) call Obama to the mat to find out exactly, specifically how he (Obama) plans to pay for his sweeping ideas.

Huge economic issues

We have such huge economic issues this year. A war being run on deficit spending, the mortgage crisis, a looming recession, millions of uninsured Americans, rising prices. What specific policies does she see John McCain supporting that she, as a business woman, thinks are the solution to these economic problems?

Some backstory - I just spent the weekend in the Bay Area, really talking about the healthcare situation in the US, and how it differs from the healthcare situation in the UK. Really seeing the pain and terror of the lack of universal healthcare, in the US, from the perspective of people who have to live with the consequences of the healthcare inequities that exist. Hearing the stories of how coverage with one insurer can render an individual, effectively, unable to move home to be with their family, because their insurer doesn't operate in other states, and other insurers won't provide continuation of cover.

And then thinking about the obscene amounts of money that have been poured into certain militaristic operations. And how even a fraction of that money could have made a substantial difference in the quality of lives of US citizens, like my friends and their families.

So I guess a less snarky question from me - other than the ones you've already mooted, which I'd love to hear her answers to - would be for her to justify John McCain's proposed level of investment in the miltary operations in those countries, against the uses to which that money could be put, domestically on healthcare, and internationally on aid and development.

(And I promise I'll try not to be so bitter, next time!)
