@ Gena:
Yes, I've seen that

@ Gena:

Yes, I've seen that "Fair Use" video, its great. And thanks for your links, they are very useful ( I happen to be a teacher!) especially this bit which describes the four factor test.

I'm wondering how all of this works internationally? I mean - are these laws different from country to country, and if so, which countries laws apply - the one the server is situated in, or what?

Picapp Is A Good Resource For Pictures

Picapp is a service that, once you register, allows you to post their pictures on your blog. The pictures are embedded in a frame, a la YouTube, and they have a small ad attached. Other than that, they are free and they are legal to use.

I've used several of them and I find the service very good. Picapp is at this link.

Copyright

With copyright the old adage rings true for me... "if in doubt, don't."

That said, I look for public domain images or create my own when I can. I do post images used on CommonDreams.org because I used them in the same way they do... as educational information. I also post CODEPINK photos without knowing which friends picture it is and figure they will let me know and I can credit them. Other than that I try to be pretty careful as I don't want people stealing my words; I figure they don't want me stealing their images.

I have scanned book covers and linked to my image of the item.

I'm not a lawyer or any kind of a copyright or intellectual property expert, so this isn't advice, just my take on the topic. I definitely think it is one worty of discussion.

copyright and images on your blog

I've been trying to find informatin about the legalities (and etiquette) surrounding the use of other people's images on my blog. I found this link but it does not really cover my question.

On my blog I often review the work of illustrators of books I love. I scan the images in from my books, and put them on my blog, hosted on the server that hosts my blog. For example, this post on my blog Is there a problem with doing this? Do I need to get permision from someone?

Also - how acceptable is it to place an image that is actually on another site, on your blog, linked there with a <img src /> tag?
