Some blogs for you

In prep for my move to Illinois, I loaded up my feedreader with bloggers from the Chicago area. You might be interested in doing something similar. Be sure to click these folks' blogrolls because they likely link to others in the area.

Relatives, good

Would it be possible for you to go up ahead of time and stay with them until you find a job - that it would make it easier for you to find a place to live in an area that works for you and your niece and nephews.

Raleigh area because

we have relatives in that area and other parts of N.C. We've visited many times and like the area. It seems to be much less expensive than New York, and we're hoping that the move will give us a chance to actually save (can you believe that?) for a better home in the future.

In addition, my niece is concerned about her boys. The oldest is going to be 13 in a few months and is already making some poor choices with friends. Some of that has to do with the fact that my niece works full time and is not available for much quality time with her sons. I'm counting on helping her as much as possible so that she can have more time to spend with the boys, and I can go out of my mind! LOL

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate your taking the time to respond.

Temporary housing

I think that's what I'd do - grab a six month lease on some place small. Give yourself time to find a job and get to know the area and determine where you want to live.

Maria is right - Craigslist is a good idea - look for a sub-lease and then look to see what types of jobs are listed in the local area.

It might also be a good idea for you to go first - before your niece and the boys.

Underlying all of this, I have one question - why Raleigh NC? What's pulling you there rather than somewhere else?

I had actually thought of moving into an apartment first, in order to keep the costs down, until we acquire employment. I appreciate your other suggestions as well.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Hmmm, tricky situation

It's hard given that you're both re-locating. Is there any way you can afford to establish yourselves in a temporary location (month-to-month apartment or short-term lease) while you find a job and then look for a more permanent housing option?

That's been my experience, too - that unless you are going the corporate relocation route it is hard to connect with employers while you are out of town. But depending on what type of employment you are looking for you could use headhunters or certain recruiting websites to possibly get past that.

You could check out Craigslist to maybe find a short-term/contract position you could secure before moving.

I don't know of any Raleigh specific websites but if you are part of any communities or social networking sites I'd do as you are doing here and seek Raleigh resource suggestions.

Good luck! I hope someone else comes along with more concrete suggestions or advice. I'll certainly offer my supportive vibes and admire your positive attitude to your new adventure!

And kudos for the family compound type of arrangement. I'm a bit jealous. I am a weirdo that would love to have multiple generations of family all living together but my family doesn't share my eagerness ;)

Relocating and Seeking Advice

So I'm thinking seriously of leaving Long Island and moving to the Raleigh, NC area. My niece (who is a single mom of two young boys) and I are going to be living together. This will be HUGE change for me, since I've lived by myself for over 25 years, and for her family since they've also been alone, living in Massachusetts.

But we're thinking that together, we can help each other to make better lives for all of us. The problem is that as much as we talk about the move, we can't decide what to do first. So I thought I'd post a blog here, and ask the Blogher community for advice!

What would you do? Is the first step to find a job, or find a place to live? I've found that potential employers won't even consider my resume without knowing that I am residing in the area. Yet how do we decide what to look for in a house if we do not know what our income will be and therefore don't know what we can afford?

Do we throw caution to the wind and just take any house in the hopes that we can afford the rent?

This is new territory for me, since I've always moved because of a job, and relocation was paid for by the company. I'm no longer in that situation...

So I'm asking the bloghers for advice. If you have personal stories to share, or if you know of websites that might help us in this endeavor, I'd sure appreciate your comments.

Even if you don't know of any resources to help, your good thoughts and prayers will be appreciated also.

Life is about to change for me once again, and I'm getting ready for the adventure!
