Heartbroken over this loss.

I wrote this over at momocrats.com but have this need to shout my saddness from the rooftops a bit. Maybe its cheating to cut and paste this but its how I feel. Losing Russert is a massive loss and I guess I am needing to reach out to my fellow bloggers a bit!

This news is absolutely heart-breaking. Russert's true passion for politics and the election was so very contagious. He always got me fired up! He asked EXCELLENT questions and expected so much from those he interviewed. He summed up the big political picture smartly, sussinctly and straight from the hip. Watching his co-workers discuss his passing broke my heart. I am just not sure how this election will feel without him. Russert was always a "given" after a big election news event. Amoungst all of the pundits, the news anchors, the commentators - it was HE who I trusted. He who I wanted to hear from first. He spelled it out, set the tone and boiled it down. What a horrible loss. My heart goes out to his family and co-workers during this very sad and shocking time. If silly ol' me misses him this much already, I can't imagine what his family and the rest of the big news wigs are going through.

You can always tell when someone was a really solid colleague and friend. I watched the Brian Williams/Brokaw exchange this afternoon and was touched by how they remembered him. A reporter on the local affiliate here in DC (they work in the same building) broke down in tears when the anchors were interviewing him on the 6 o'clock news.

A friend of mine from school is interning at NBC this semester and when I spoke to her today she said it was remarkable, that so many in the building were so genuinely touched by Tim Russert and the sense of grief was very real. Said she felt like the only person in the world who'd never met him. It was nice to get that personal touch.

In addition to the personal loss for his family, friends and colleagues, I keep thinking about how few actual "thought leaders" (for lack of a better term...sorry, I'm tired.) there are in our media, and how we've lost such a tremendous historian for this campaign. I wonder if he was the only person to interview each of the candidates from the beginning? Seems especially sad that he'll miss such an important election. Again, I know this pales in comparison to his life, but I've watched him since the 2000 race and could just tell how immersed he was in the whole gig.

Sad. It's so true that we only have the moment we're in.

why all the good ones? Ive been sick about this since hearing a few hours ago. as a writer, as a washingtonian, as someone who lost my dad too young for his young son, Luke, recent BC graduate, as a former upstate NYer, and mostly... as a person.

This is a loss I'll be grieving for a long, long time to come.

Reporting very sad news...Tim Russert has died of a heart attack at the age of 58. As more information comes in, I will post it here. This is the video of the first announcement on MSNBC just a short while ago...

WASHINGTON - Tim Russert, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief and the moderator of “Meet the Press,” died Friday after a sudden heart attack at the bureau, NBC News said Friday. He was 58. Russert was recording voiceovers for Sunday’s “Meet the Press” program when he collapsed, the network said. No details were immediately available.

Russert, the recipient of 48 honorary doctorates, took over the helm of “Meet the Press” in December 1991. Now in its 60th year, “Meet the Press” is the longest-running program in the history of television. In 2008, Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Timothy John Russert Jr. was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on May 7, 1950. He was a graduate of Canisius High School, John Carroll University and the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. He was a member of the bar in New York and the District of Columbia.
