Testing solutions to trackback spam

Hi Elana,

Thanks for noticing! I'm sorry to say that we turned off trackbacks about a week ago because we were having trouble with spam.

Hopefully we won't have to do this for long (althoughI notice that many sites are turning to this insufficient solution). Suggestion: If/when you write about a post, why don't you include a link back to it in the comments section here? I'd welcome the opportunity to learn about it and go read it.

So just how stuck up are you, web-wise?

Contributing Editor Laura Scott also blogs at rare pattern and pingVision.

It's presented as a whimsical sort of thing, but as it turns out, it's a little bit more than that. The teaser question is this: How big is your...

Whether it's big or not so much, if you've ever done a vanity search, you want to check out EgoSurf.

The idea is quite simple: You enter your name or online handle, and your blog URLs, and let the site go to work.

What's different -- and what makes the site more than just another whimsical web 2.0 widget -- is that they actually run a "deep search" and qualify those hits that come up:

Using our patent pending deepthroat search technology, we seek deeper than most. Using one degree of separation, we look at each page retrieved by the search engines, and seek out links to your sites.

This deep searching routes out even the most obscure references. Our finely tuned egopoints algorithm is then applied to the search result.

This is good for me, because there are a lot of Laura Scotts out there, and nearly all of them are not me. (Doing "Laura Scott" searches on sites like IceRocket and Technorati also results in totally off-base hits like MySpace posts mentioning "Laura, Scott" ... and all sorts of other people who were at the party or went bowling or saw the movie or participated in the spelling bee.

So, as it turns out, EgoSurf is a pretty good place to do that vanity search without all the extra chaff.

Also interesting is how the different search engines measure up. (At the risk of embarrassing myself with my near-obscurity ego-points-wise, I'll use myself as an example.)

Google seems to be most familiar with me.

I've made less of an impression on Yahoo.

Is there any surprise out there that MSN comes up last? What kind of search engine results does an 800-pound gorilla come up with? Any kind it wants.

(These graphics are supposed to provide a live display of my ego points, but as I preview right now, they're blank. I should note that Technorati and del.icio.us are also scanned, and they came up 0 for me -- but I suspect that might not be due to my obscurity so much as because perhaps EgoSurf wasn't connecting with them on any of a handful of searches I ran where I know there are links. It seems to be a temporary thing, as one can see Technorati and del.icio.us results for others.)

So if you feel your virtual ears burning, maybe it's time to do an EgoSurf.

Related: Spell with flickr ("spellr?"), who did the nifty letter graphics above -- another fun site.
