Great Advice

You know, when I'm thinking about riding airplanes, crashing is the last thing that occurs to me. But thats a good idea to wear shoes with leather soles.

A few extra tips:

1-Wear clothes that don't wrinkle so easily. You don't have time to worry about your appearance.

2-Jeans are comofortable, but you don't want to look sloppy. Solution? Dark dressy denim. Make sure the jeans are mid-rise though.

3-Don't wear to many accessories or a lot of jewlery. You don't want to be uncomfortable, nor you want to risk your stuff getting stolen.

Want to know something funny? I ALWAYS wear shoes that I could run from a burning plane in. ALWAYS. Right afer I open that emergency exit door and toss it out in front of me.

Seriously.

Pack the running shoes

I know that the conventional wisdom is to wear your biggest,
heaviest shoes, which works fine if we're talking about a pair of chic
boots, but running shoes are tricky because they are meant to be RUN IN
not worn for casual wear (you all DID know that, right? right).

I would say wear some functional flats and pack your running shoes; you can stuff them full of underwear or socks to help them take up less room in your bag. If this is a short trip, consider NOT running while you're there, or if you're going someplace that you visit regularly, think about leaving a spare pair of running shoes at your destination (my mom leaves extra walking shoes at my house, so she doesn't have to pack them). Otherwise, find a way to get them in the suitcase, but wear some spiffier shoes on the plane.

I give kids a pass on the Crocs -- they are the PERFECT shoe for flying, if you're a child, and then the kids can also wear them to the pool or beach.

I like your idea of flats with a sneaker tread -- perfect.

I learned to pack and travel light and comfortable from my Uncle Lonnie. When I first went off to college he showed me how to pack and be effortless cruising through the airports, bus terminals etc. To this day I am very good if not better at traveling than most.

I feel you on this post! I am ready to hit the road baby.

Shoes with leather soles if possible.

I don't fly often. But every time I do, I recall years ago when a plane when down and many of the passengers were saved. (a young soap opera star whose name I totally forget worked to get several others off). The one thing that saved many people were leather soles.

Rubber soles will melt to the floor if the plane has a fire. Flip-flops? I don't even want to think.

So while the odds of my plane crashing and burning are miniscule, this is one easy way to be prepared. Wear shoes that will allow me to survive.

I agree with all you say, Susan. Comfortable clothing that I could live in for 2 days. All important meds, small toiletries and spare undies in my carry-on.

Not snakes but KIDS ON A PLANE!

A week from today, I am flying with both of my sons (5 and 2) to see grandma. 3 hours in the air and I can do it! (...she says with a nervous laugh.) But not only do I have to have the "right" outfit, so do they. Shoes ARE key - something easy to get on and off thru security but we will all be running I am sure (me chasing them) - even if we're not in a rush. For them, sneakers or sandals? Maybe crocs? (I know I hate those things but they sure are practical.) For me, I have some slip on flats with sneaker treads. Clothes? Well, I have to wear something comforatable to run after kids in, wrestle kids in and not get too hot or cold in - b/c if one falls asleep on me, you can BET I am not getting up to put on a sweater if I get cold. No purse but only a "clown car"like backpack filled to the hilt with fun, each thing better than the next, doled out one at a time, spread out over the 3 hours. The ipod will be for the 5 year old - he likes to listen to classical. (Huh, I guess Baby Einstein really does work.) Maybe I'll pack a book. Protein snacks for energy are a must. But obviously, the most important thing I can gear myself up with for the plane? Lets say it together: A. Sense. Of. Humor. Yup.

Great post!

Right on about the carry-on

I don't know whether it's because i had "older" parents, or because I'm "older" now myself :-), but I remember when flying was a Big Deal and people dressed up for it. I'm glad that's really not such a practice anymore, but even though one wants to be comfortable on a long flight, that's no excuse for some of the things people wear on planes. You actually have left the house, you know...

But enough of my snobbery. I just have to say I totally agree about the carry-on. I always have a just-in-case change of underwear in there, as well as another shirt if I can squeeze it in. I may switch my "essential" toiletries to that bad the next time I fly, wihich would unclude antiperspirant and facial towelettes.

Also, if youwer glasses or contacts - or both, like me - they should be in your carry-on or purse at all times, along with travel bottles of the necessary solutions.

I'm not flying anywhere this summer (no BlogHer for me), but I'll definitely keep these suggestions in mind the next time I do!

Casual vs Professional

During my several-times-a-month-on-a-plane years, "business wear" turned to "business casual" and even for many, "workplace casual". I was struck by how differently I was treated when I occasionally veered more to the casual side than the business end.

I always get hung up on

I always get hung up on shoes. My running shoes take up so much room in my suitcase that I want to wear them. But they don't slip off and they don't "go" with my travel outfits. It's easier to pack the flats because they're so slim, but they're also easier to actually wear through the airport. What's one to do when ease of packing and ease of wearing clash?

Snakes on a plane! What to wear when you fly

I love to fly; one of my favorite things ever is to get on an airplane with my iPod and a magazine and just fritter away the time it takes to get where I'm going. But I also believe in being prepared for the worst, or at least for the most likely hassles, and in choosing clothing that will outlast my day of travel. I also believe that I should be the one sitting in the emergency exit row, because I will be able to open the door and toss it out faster than the rest of you.

I have issues. Let's just move on.

What are the most likely travel hassles? Flight delays, for one, which can lead to connections so tight that you only make your second flight by sprinting through the airport; lost luggage, for another, which can leave you wearing the clothes you traveled in for days. Choose the right outfit, though, and you can easily survive both of these worst case scenarios.

Before you actually get in your closet and choose an outfit, think about what you will be doing during your day of travel: lifting bags, walking fast, sitting in all sorts of random places. You want to put together an outfit that makes it possible to do all of those things and still look good.

You also want an outfit that you could wear for more than one day, if need be; if you arrive at your destination but your luggage goes elsewhere, you don't want to have to spend the next day or two in that vintage Aerosmith tee and low rise jeans. Although you really don't want to be wearing that in the first place. Seriously.

Avoid white or light colored pants (they'll be dirty before you even get on the plane), long flowy skirts (you'll only get tangled in all that fabric), and anything strappy and revealing (your laptop bag slips off your shoulder and suddenly you're showing your cleavage to an entire Southwest flight). Skip short skirts and short shorts; they're not appropriate for flying. And for the love of all that is holy, NO FLIP FLOPS. Or stiletto heels, either. If you have to run to make your connection, you'll want some real shoes.

And don't even get me started about what kind of predicament you will be in if your plane goes down. Just don't.

So what SHOULD you wear? Think about your destination: what will the weather be like? what will you be doing when you arrive? who will you see when you land? Be prepared for weather that is hotter or colder than where you started your travel day; there's nothing more miserable then arriving and realizing that you are going to freeze/swelter for the duration of your trip to the hotel. By the same token, don't ever assume that you can fly in your pajamas and get cleaned up before you have to talk to anyone important; you never know who will be in the airport or the hotel lobby. Assume that you're going to run into the most important person you will see during your entire trip in baggage claim and dress appropriately.

Dressing appropriately doesn't mean wearing your little black dress on the plane, but it does mean making an effort to look professional and stylish and pulled together. Layers are ideal for airline travel; flights can be hot or cold, and having the option to add or subtract a jacket or sweater is an easy way to build an outfit. Start with comfortable pants, in a dark color; add a blouse or tee, and a sweater or jacket. Choose flat shoes that are easy to slip on and off for security checks and comfortable to walk (or run!) in.

If you will need a jacket at your destination, wear it on the plane; that way, you're covered if your luggage goes missing AND if you run into someone really important in the airport. Speaking of your luggage going missing, toss the following into your carry on, just in case: clean underwear, deoderant, and whatever makeup you can't live without. You'll be glad you did.

Traveing make you tired? 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic has the lowdown on the perfect concealer. Pregnant and looking for inspiration? Allie at My Wardrobe Today is blogging her maternity wear. And finally in an ACTUAL travel related post, Amy Hatch writes about shopping on vacation. She has some good tips, if I do say so myself.

Susan Wagner writesa about style at Fashion Find and The Working Closet, and about everything else at Friday Playdate. God only knows what she will be wearing on the flight to San Francisco, but it will NOT include flip flops.
