It Happened After Venus' Semi-Final

The woman Venus defeated in the semis, Elena Dementieva, made a comment about the winner of an all Williams final being "a family decision," implying the family would decide which of the sisters would win before they went out on the court. Venus responded to the comment later saying in part:

Well, the main thing is that I find the question pretty offensive because I'm extremely professional in everything that I do on and off the court.

You can read the rest of Venus' comments here. Dementieva later released a statement that her response did not imply a pre-match fix, and because English isn't her first language (she's Russian), what was interpreted was not what she meant.

The problem is, Dementieva said something similar several years ago when the sisters played in another Grand Slam final. Something about how Richard Williams (their Dad) would decide which of the sisters would win.

As Venus said, even the suggestion is offensive and ridiculous. And if Dementieva meant it, which I'm seriously hoping she didn't, it's a dangerous accusation for anyone to make while the tennis world is investigating several matches and the irregular betting patterns related to them.

The Williams Sisters Are incredible

I thought they were both wonderful both in competition and in the questions they were asked afterwards - even the inane ones. They knew, as Venus stated, that one of them would win and one would lose.

I love their athleticism and their bond and their grace. They're loving sisters and have matured beautifully.

I Love The Williams Sisters

I'm a huge tennis fan and an even bigger Williams sisters fan. I wrote a post about it on Megan's Minute.

Elisa, I agree with you, I would have loved to have seen a third set as well, but I think the match was pretty competitive. The first set especially. If Serena had just kept it together for a couple of crucial points in the last game of that first set, they would have gone to a tie-break and who knows what might have happened then.

And I loved Serena's response to that dumb statement about her not looking happy. Just like when Venus fielded that obnoxious insinuation the other day about how the winner of the match would be "fixed" before it even started, both sisters are poised and know exactly how to handle themselves on and off the court.

A few hours after today's final, the sisters also won the doubles title. The reason it wasn't covered on NBC is because I don't think it even started until NBC's scheduled coverage was over. What will probably happen is if the men's match doesn't take up the entire coverage schedule tomorrow, they'll show the women's double's match after the men's final.

Speaking which...go Rafa Nadal!

"I think the right word to use in a situation like this is "dominant," writes BlogHer Sports CE Sarah who knows a little something about tennis. "Tomorrow will mark the third time the sisters will be meeting each other at the Wimbledon Ladies' Singles Final. Then a couple of hours later they will be playing as a team in the Ladies' Doubles Finals."
