Hey !

I just heard an interview Michelle Obama did with Ryan Seacrest on his L.A. radio show. If you wanna hear it, peep it here at KIISfm.com:

http://www.kiisfm.com/pages/obama/obama.html

Wonderful to see you here (from a non-custodial mom)

Michelle,

This is wonderful that you are blogging! I agree with many that you probably won't have time to read all these comments..lol I found this site because someone passed along an email telling me you were blogging here.

I am a working mother like you and for the last 7 years have been a non-custodial mother. My children are always on my mind, too. There are many women like me, who are wonderful mothers yet who live the agonizing pain everyday of not waking up to see their kids and who don't have the opportunity to tuck them in at night. These are simple, everyday, precious moments that I hope that no mother ever takes for granted.

When your husband is President, I hope that more awareness is raised about non-custodial mothers losing primary custody of their children in state court systems which often ignore disturbing evidence presented that it is in the best interest of the children to place them with their mothers.

I am happy to be here and to keep up-to-date on your posts and that of many others. Have a great week!

Warmly,

Just me... Just now...

Hi Michelle! I think you may have time to blog, but you may not have time to read all of the replies! Either way, I am new to bloggin myself. I posted a blog not to long ago and then I saw that you blog here too! It's great to read what you have time to write- especially just about being a mom! I have a little one myself and I know time is a precious thing to have... Anyway, may God bless you and give you the strength to handle all you will endure- He already has. It takes a VERY special man to be President of the United States of America (and even more to be successful at it!) but it takes a VERY special woman to be the First Lady- We have had very few who stood out. You, are going to knock the pants off of all of them!

Lot's of love, hugs and hope-

I Got Kind of Weepy

Thank you for taking the time to write here, to share, despite the negativity that has already been thrown at you from people hiding behind the anonymity of the internet.

I wish I had something more profound to write but this moved me to a point of humbled silence. So, again, thank you.

To the next First Lady of the United States of America

Why does the thought of knowing that you may actually read my post cause me to want to stop and meditate about the words that I should place here?

Because words are important. Words do matter. Why some even believe, and I am one of them, that the Word was spoken and the World came into being!

Words are powerful. They have the ability to build up, or to tear down. To encourage, or to discourage. To cause a smile, or to shed a tear. To create a leader, or a destroyer.

To you, the next President of the United States of America, and your two precious little girls; I say continue on in the way God is leading you. Countless millions of people have you in their prayers and their thoughts. You have been an inspiration to many and will be the cause for a re-defining moment in the history of this country.

Please, however, remain humble and true to what you know in your heart to be right and best for the country in which you will soon have the greatest responsibility. For, by the authority that GOD may see fit to invest in you, we will look to you for direction in this world. How to survive when we are struggling to pay our bills. How to care for our aging parents with skyrocketing healthcare costs. How to educate our children in an educational system that is old, out-dated, and not equipped to prepare our children to succeed in this new global world. How to compete in a global economy. How to be true to what we know is right.

Please help us by not going back on your words. Words mean something, and we hung on every word that you uttered. We trust you. We believe you. And we so admire, adore, love, and respect you!

And, as for me, I will do my part!

I have never been so interested in my life in politics until now! I never knew, understood, or probably saw the connection between legislation, policies, programs, services, and the wel-being of the nation until now! Although I was a "victim" of that "shifting moving bar" you spoke about, I didn't fully understand all that was happening to me; until I heard your speech.

I thought it was me!

Because, I did everything I thought I was suppose to do. Stayed out of trouble, went to college, did my very best in spite of my limitations, got a job, took every opportunity of training, education, stretch projects, etc, that I could, went to graduate school and graduated with honors at the top of my class while working full time as a manager, traveling one weekend a month to attend graduate school, and doing everything I knew to do to survive so that I can care for an aging mother and be a blessing to others. Only to see my job taken a way from me, the cost of living sky-rocketing, the bills piling up, and me just barely keeping my head above water.

What happened! That shifting moving bar!

But now that I know the "forces" that are working, I feel empowered to do something about it. I feel empowered to live even more responsibly, to help others to avoid the pains that I had to go through, and to stake my place at the table as a voice to be heard for change in America.

It's not easy, because life doesn't adjust it self to my self-proclamations. It doesn't say "Hey... she's serious let's just step back out of her way and leave her alone so she can accomplish her goals."

Doesn't work that way.

In fact, there seems to be a force, a law, a principle that says.. "Oh she wants to try to help someone not to have to go through the struggles and disappointments she went through? We are not having any of that.. FULL FORCE ATTACK!"

But, its o.k., because when and if I should feel tired or discouraged, first, I humble myself in prayer and tell GOD all about it. I know where my stength lies. Then I will read and meditate on the scriptures to get encouragement, strength, guidance, and direction. And, if need be, I will often listen to a speech by my future President or the future First Lady of the United States of America and get FIRED UP all over again!

May you and your family be well. We love you and thank you for the sacrifice you all are making for the world, for our country, and for me!

Love Alisa

Be Well. Hug. Fist Bump.

(If you want to know a little more about me and part of my plan for survival in these tough economic times; you can visit me at my blog in your spare time - hee hee - )

A prayer for the safety of the Obama Family

I, like many across the nation, and indeed the world pray for the safety and well-being of your husband on this historic journey. My blogpost of August 8, 2008 speaks to this subject

08.08.08

God bless you and your family. See you in the White House!

Thank you for this insightful post. I am a little embarrassed by the naysayers above who decided to anonymously bash in their comments and hope it does not discourage you from returning to BlogHer.

Dear Ms. Obama,

Seeing you on national tv and in other media feeds my soul in a visceral way. a black woman, a mother, a sister, a struggler -- like the rest of us. I'm proud of you and your family: husband, and daughters, for making it seem so easy, though we all recognize the hurdles. Keep up the good work, ignore the haters, continue to shine. You make barack look good!!!!! And it's great but not surprising that People Magazine says you're his calm at the center. He truly loves you and personifies what every woman wants in a husband, father and well, yeah, leader of the country -- dirty laundry on the floor notwithstanding!!! He's my 13-year old son's hero.

My buddy Paulette is by far your husband's BIGGEST fan and supporter. Here's her blogsite address, she would be immeasurably thrilled if you would stop by, it's no coincidence that your blogs have similar names, she too is big into dialog and exchanging ideas: http://letustalk.wordpress.com/.

Loving you for loving America enough to sacrifice your family to make our country better.

You are also are blessed with an incredible Mom – God bless her!

I am an AVID supporter of your husband and we have some great posts about him on our blog.I wrote a blog in May that you may find to be of interest, you can read it at: http://letustalk.wordpress.com/2008/05/24/leave-michelle-obama-alone/

We will continue to listen, watch and pray for you and your family as you continue on this incredibly inspiring journey – be blessed and be safe!

You seem to have missed

in your lurking that several of our editors are conservative and do not support Obama

American Princess

Liz Mair from the McCain campaign

Backyard Conservative

Rocks In My Dryer

Also, quite a few editors and members who supported Senator Clinton in the primaries also have not commented. What you are seeing is that mostly those who do support the Obama's made an effort to comment. Not terribly surprising.

You'll note that on Liz Mair's first post a number of BlogHer Contributing Editors who do not support Senator McCain gave her a warm welcome, were respectful and did not use the comments as an opportunity to slam her for the perceived failings of the candidate.

I have no issue with you not supporting Obama - reasonable people can and do disagree vigorously on important issues. However, I am no more stupid for supporting Obama than you are for finding him unacceptable.

Should Cindy McCain take BlogHer up on the same offer extended to blog here I am certain that most will extend her a warm welcome and, as with Michelle Obama, many of her husband's (and her) supporters will comment for the first time here simply to thank her for engaging. I certainly would hope that the comments would not be filled with petty complaints about her husband nor her reported personal weaknesses in the past. And that, as with Obama, would not indicate that BlogHer as an organization and the editors as a group support McCain - simply that we are capable of treating an invited guest with respect.

FYI Ms. Karen, contributing editor, I've lurked here for over a year. A friend invited me over a year ago and said she thought I'd like it. So far and I say so far because things like the above steam me - you had no idea why I signed up or how long I'd been around but because I dared to speak the truth about the Obamessiah's woman you had to make a snide comment.

I had a nice long reply written but decided to shorten it. Here's the deal - just hold the coronation now and watch the country slide into socialism as the people Omaba admires would like. The man has 143 days experience in the Senate and nothing to brag about that he did in that time - very lame and no way is he ready to be the President of anything, much less the US.

You couldn't have said it any plainer if you wrote it outright: THIS SITE AND ITS EDITORS SUPPORT OBAMESSIAH

Sad, very sad.

Let's Talk

Hi everybody,

I’m excited to be posting on BlogHer. Not only because blogging is something I’ve actually been able to beat my daughters to; but because it gives me the opportunity to tell you a little bit about them, my husband, myself, and our experiences traveling all over this great country.

Over the course of this campaign, I’ve been hosting roundtable discussions with working women all across America. I’m there to talk about my husband, of course – but more importantly, I’m there to listen. We talk about what it’s like to play multiple roles at once and what it’s like to feel stretched thin between the demands of a career and family.

And of course, we talk about our children. How they’re the first thing we think about when we wake up in the morning, and the last thing we think about when we go to bed at night. I know that no matter where I am – work, the campaign trail, wherever – my girls are always on my mind.

What I find is that our stories are similar. But what I also hear at each roundtable is that women are struggling. They are working hard and playing by the rules, doing the most important job of raising the next generation, but somehow can never get ahead. They’re desperate for change.

I’ve heard from mothers struggling to make ends meet because their salaries aren’t keeping up with the cost of groceries. But if they take a second job, they can’t afford the additional cost of childcare. Or the moms who are nervous about taking time from their jobs to care for a sick child. Or the moms-to-be who are scared of getting fired if the boss finds out they’re pregnant.

Then there are women who work hard every day doing the same jobs as men, but earning less. And the military families, who struggle to make ends meet with one paycheck where there used to be two. They welcome their loved ones home with full hearts but little support from their government for their service.

I hear similar stories everywhere I go. These struggles – the struggles of working women and families across America – aren’t new to me or to any of us. And they’re certainly not new to Barack.

He was raised by two strong, working women – his mother and his grandmother. Growing up, he saw his single mother put herself through school while raising him and his sister alone. She was determined to show them that in America, there are no barriers to success if you’re willing to work for it. But he also saw her struggle to make ends meet, at times worrying about how she would pay the bills.

He saw his grandmother, the primary breadwinner for his family, work her way up at a bank. But he also saw how, once she got to a certain level, she hit a glass ceiling despite her hard work and abilities. He saw that she was passed over and underpaid, a problem that persists today for too many women.

And he sees me, his wife, trying to juggle jobs and raise kids; often feeling like when I’m with the kids, I’m shortchanging work, and when I’m at work or campaigning, I’m shortchanging the kids. I know you understand these struggles. Barack understands them too.

That’s why he’s worked to give families the tools they need to make a better life for their kids for over twenty years – from his years in Chicago working with a group of churches to help families devastated when local steel plants shut down; to the Illinois State Senate, where he worked to move families from welfare to work and expand early childhood education and child health care; to his fights in the U.S. Senate for equal pay and a fair economy.

As President, he’ll continue these fights. And he’ll build an economy that rewards work over wealth, ensures a world-class education, and creates quality, affordable health care for everyone who wants it.

He’ll do all this because he’s determined to change Washington so that instead of just talking about family values, we actually have policies that value families. Policies that actually make it easier for women to support, care for, and raise their families without having to choose between their kids and their careers.

I’ll be honest – when Barack first told me he was thinking about running for President, I had mixed feelings. I worried about my girls and what a campaign might do to their lives. I wanted the best life possible for them, and a presidential campaign wasn’t part of that equation.

But then I thought about it. And the world I want for them is a world where they’re paid fairly and equally for their work; where they don’t have to choose between kids and careers; where they can dream without limits without a glass ceiling standing in their way. And I realized that if that’s the world I want for them, then I had to do my part to elect someone like my husband.

We all need to do our part to keep women’s issues at the forefront of the national debate. That’s why communities like BlogHer are so important. It’s not just a forum or sounding board; it’s an energetic space that lets women know they’re not alone. It’s our own national virtual roundtable. But we need to take these online conversations offline as well. I’ll do my part, and so will Barack. But we need you all too.

Thanks for allowing me to post here. I plan to continue blogging – and listening.
