New Foods

Children are too smart for tricks to get them to eat new foods. I just eat the food and ask them to try it. I don't give them something else until they tried it and still didn't like it.

You might not be old enough to try this

That was the phrase that worked to get my kids to try something new. They were close together in age and the younger ones were always envious of what the older ones were allowed to do. Just suggesting that you had to be old enough to try it usually got them to at least try a few bites. If they didn't like it that was ok, at least they had made the attempt.

Inspiring children to try new foods and eat nutritious meals

The thing that I do that works really well is to introduce new foods to children when they are really hungry. When they are hungry enough to eat a horse, vegetables suddenly don't look so bad!

Grow a brain

I read somewhere that trying new foods improves the mind. I told my kinder that by improving the mind, one's brain gets bigger. They love that, and will now try all kinds of foods (even some that I have a hard time trying).

A few different ideas

Don't force them to eat anything. That always backfires. Introduce new foods but if they won't eat them try at another time when they might be in the mood to try it.

If it's possible mix the new food in with something they already like.

Don't give the kids something that you wouldn't eat.

The younger that you introduce new foods to your kids the better. This way as they get older they have an array of different foods to eat.

Thanks fo the contest.

Sprinkle Bacon Bits

I sprinkle soy based bacon bits on food the kids would otherwise reject.

It works for my cats too.

Role Model

Even if my kids don't know what a "role model" is, I know they pick up habits--good AND bad--from their parents. I try to eat the way I'd like them to eat. Doing that makes me think twice about what I'm eating, when I'm eating, and how I'm eating. It works out well for all of us.

Try it another way

I'd have them be creative and make add it to another food(s) to change the taste. That way they'd have their own recipe for something nutritious that most kids would like.

Make it fun

My niece and nephew are pretty healthy eaters and will usually try anything once. However every now and then when I want them to try something they aren't sure of I try to find a fun way for them to eat it. We often use mini muffin tins for picnic lunches on the living room floor. Cut up apples, carrots, grapes, cheese and crackers each in their own little space. With the last cup filled with pudding. One day I sliced avocado for them to try. Wouldn't have anything to do with it, the words yucky and slimy were used so I ate it. Later when I was eating the other half because they didn't want it I had diced it inside the skin and was scooping it out with a spoon. Well they were all about that and took it away from me. We make open faced peanut butter sandwiches on wheat bread. They use raisins and whatever kind of cereal they want to and create their own designs.

Kidfresh Mealtime Sweepstakes!

Update 11/1/08: The sweepstakes has now ended. A winner will be chosen at random shortly. Thank you all for your interest in this promotion.

How often do we hear children say : "I hate broccoli and I don't want any!" As parents, we constantly have to balance giving children the food they want with making sure they eat a healthy diet.

BlogHer has joined up with new healthy & all-natural mealtime alternative Kidfresh (www.votekidfresh.com) to launch a sweepstakes where you can share tips and stories for inspiring children to try new foods and eat nutritious meals.

As each child and situation is different, creative inspiration during meal-time can sometimes be the difference between a peaceful family gathering and parent/child conflict.

Every parent has his/her own tips when it comes to mealtime:

Cooking creativity - "Since I began to make sliced eggplants baked with milk and browned on top, my son loves eating veggies. He really enjoys golden brown and crunchy food"

Tweaking your children's favorite foods - "My daughter loves mac and cheese. I buy her the Kidfresh ones with hidden carrots inside"

Repackaging/enhancing the eating experience - "Here comes the plane; open up the hanger." "Why don't you try dipping your asparagus into ketchup so you don't taste it?"

Share your story or idea below and you could win a $500 Visa® gift card from Kidfresh! The sweepstakes will run through October 31st with a winner picked at random.

We know how difficult it can be to come up with nutritious meals your child will actually eat. Kidfresh is all about convenience for busy and caring parents, offering fresh and healthy meals for children.

Get $1 off any Kidfresh product!

Click on the image to download and print your coupon.

Kidfresh is available in Whole Foods stores and other retailers in 13 states (NY, NJ, CT, MA, MI, RI, MN, NE, MO, IN, ME, WI, and IL) and in airport terminals in JFK and La Guardia. The retail store is located on 1628 2nd avenue NY, NY 10028 - Telephone : 1-800-DO-KIDFRESH

Connect to www.kidfresh.com to find the nearest store carrying Kidfresh.

Contest runs from September 30, 2008 to October 31, 2008.
