Amongst my friends some do, some don't. Nobody lectures, but haven't we all had friends disappear off the grid due to one substance or another? They mostly come back.

Having said that, my cousin used to work with teenagers with pot psychosis, and it isn't pretty.

Clizbiz - It's definitely come up with just about everyone I've dated out here. Like, you can't come over to hang out because we're going to be smoking pot and you don't smoke pot. Or giving me a hard time because I don't want pot brownies or cookies.

Cyndie - That's cool, but I've got kinda the opposite problem. I don't want to be counted out by a guy because he occasionally smokes pot and I don't.

Cortney - Yeah, it's a weird dynamic for sure.

Sydney - LOL I am very live and let live, but I will say that I don't have a problem with the word "offended." Actually, I think it's a really important word and that people should feel comfortable expressing when they are uncomfortable. I don't think "offended" means intolerant. If someone doesn't want pot smoke around them and can't simply remove themselves from the situation, were I the smoker, I would want them to tell me.

Sassymama - Yeah, I don't think I'd ever date a total pothead, that's true.

Listen, I was a huge pot head when I was younger, I am in my early 40's and with an 8 year old-I don't smoke on a regular basis but if someone had it and offered it I might hit it once or twice. My boyfriend hates it and is against me smoking-why can't I choose? Don't judge, he knew me when he met me! Who cares if I do or not? I love the way it makes me feel, I have no inhibitions and i get really horned up and the sex is awesome for some reason. But I won't buy the shit-too expensive. I was married to a stoner and an drinker-was married I said, was not fun at all.

Great post, Liz! Personally, I like weed once in a while. It calms me down. I used to smoke all the time in my teens, but then I pretty much gave it up because I didn't want to hurt my lungs anymore. I have friends who do and friends who don't, but nobody judges anyone else. Dating a total stoner wouldn't be very fun in my opinion. I do love a good pot brownie, though!

You mean you don't want to tell everyone else what to do? You mean you don't think that you have a monopoly on 'the truth'? You mean you don't feel righteous and qualified to direct everyone else's life?

Good for you, Liz! I have grown to HATE the word "offended" because there are so many who are so disdainful of those who are different. Smoke pot, don't smoke pot - who cares? Unless someone is driving a car, it's their business and I totally applaud your position.

It's bizarre, isn't it? In Houston I don't encounter this as much as you surely do in L.A., but I know exactly what you mean. I wonder what it is that weirds people out about this?

I'm sincerely interested. Anybody have any thoughts?

Good post!

When I got divorced and started dating again, I decided that pot smoking would be a deal breaker. I don't smoke. I have friends that do, and do so when we're all together, and that's cool, but I don't partake and they're cool with that (that's why they're my friends). But I don't want to be emotionally involved with someone that does. So far, it has definitely been working for me.

OMG, I love this post! As an on-again-off-again pothead, I can appreciate the appreciation without the actual intake. I do find it weird that it affects your dating life, however. Who are these people? Perhaps it is just one of the reasons I moved from LA.

Now I'm in Colorado where everyone seems to puff - no getting away from it. Funny, I only noticed it now that I've stopped (cuz I'm running now) - guess I was too stoned to care.

The other day I was talking to a friend in South Florida, and I mentioned that I honestly think that the fact that I don't smoke pot effects my dating life in Los Angeles. Not that no one smokes pot in South Florida (LOL), but no one in South Florida ever cared if *I* did. In L.A., in the entertainment industry, people seem to care.

In Florida, I dated a former dealer. He pulled acid out of his nightstand to show me what it looked like. I've chilled in a car full of pot. More than once. I've been high at a Petty concert from the contact high, and I love the smell. When I started dating Gen Y, it was ecstasy. They didn't care if I sported a pacifier or not. No one ever cared if the drugs touched my lips.

Until L.A.

Suddenly, the fact that I don't and basically never have smoked pot or done drugs is an issue. Or at least odd. With new friends, former coworkers, potential mates. And I don't get it.

I mean, I suppose I understand if smoking pot is something you are desperate to share with your romantic partner. Like it's an uber romantic priority. Then OK.

But mostly, I feel like it's some strange assumption about my not smoking pot and what that means about who I am. Holy crap, the BS.

In my youth, it was cool. The joint or the pipe went around and those who wanted to did, and those who didn't want to didn't. Sometimes, I think it was a product of our sex education in that place, in that time. No pressure to have sex before you honestly wanted to translated into some people do drugs and some people don't. It really never occurred to me that anyone would care whether I did or didn't.

But when you tell people in L.A. that you don't smoke pot, it really seems like there's these strange assumptions about who you are and what you mean. For this live and let live Florida girl who loves the smell of pot she's not smoking, it's been surprising and annoying.

So. For the record. HOLY CRAP I COULD NOT CARE LESS ABOUT POT SMOKING.

I mean, OK, if you live in your Mom's basement, and you smoke pot 5 to 7 times a week, I'm probably not going to want to date you. But Party On, Dude. Rock your life; it's got nothin' to do with me.

And if you think you know something about me because I *don't* smoke pot, you are a Superlame, Lazy, Ass.

Eat your stupid pot brownies. Personally, I don't know why you would partake when you're not sharing that fabulous aroma. But wevs. You're cool; I'm not.

Or maybe, you should stop assuming things about people. Because the way people are about pot smoking in L.A. is really just silly. Some of us do, and some of us don't.

It's all good, and I don't think it means what you think it means.
