Zandria - Yeah, it might be that I'm just now on it, but it seems like a bit of a Facebook tipping point time right now.

Christina - I do find that Facebook really facilities the actual communication with your list of friends. More than just collecting them and then never talking.

I kind of took a break from the whole social networking internet scence. I've just started using myspace and facebook again. I guess it just didn't appeal to me a lot because even though I have lots of old contacts/friends I hardley never talk to them. So I wondered why I should bother using these sites if they didn't even serve a purpose for me. But, I'm back using them again. I admit I missed them. But I'm not addicted like I used to be.

I joined Facebook years ago, but it's just been in the past few months that I've started using it more. Definitely trippy how you can find all these people from your past that you never would have found otherwise.

Hey Liz,

Thanks for the shout out regarding my blog "The Facebook Relationship Status Symbol." After years of refusing to join the social-networking masses, I too have joined Facebook. It's been pretty entertaining so far; I have reconnected with several friends I haven't talked to forever and with some people I talk to all the time. I don't really pay any attention to the applications but I do like reading the newsfeed updates and perusing pictures. For the most part I don't take any of it too seriously, yet ...

Rori - Seriously, when I think of the friends I have who I wouldn't even know if it weren't for the blogosphere, and then how Facebook helps me stay connected to them, it blows me away.

Vered - I get what you're saying, but I suspect that for me Facebook will remain a very present, ongoing tool.

Wilma - Excellent point about integrity and how we so regularly nowadays have to make choices with our time and attention. I go through constant evaluation about time and resources.

Virginia - lol I sent you an invite! :)

Christina - You know, I think because I'm in the entertainment industry in L.A. Facebook probably will have an ongoing value for me.

Debra - Totally ignore *so* many Facebook apps! I am beginning to wonder about sending "gifts" though... No! I ignore! lol I do still enjoy a visit to the MySpace backwater. :)

Giyen - Connecting and staying connected with old friends is *so* amazing.

On Da Road - But more people are on Facebook, right? That's part of the power of it, I think; that people are on Facebook as their first social networking experience. Still, not everyone, of course.

I'm on FaceBook and I like it. don't love it.

It makes more sense to me since the redesign, but I still don't get all the frivolous apps. I ignore them. At the moment, I often us it to see what local friends are involved in and attending. I find more great things to do through friends' profiles. Makes me wonder how they find them, though.

Myspace is my quiet little backwater. I don't have many friends there, and they don't seem very active (or is it the interface?). Sometimes I wonder why I ever come back. Still I have several friends that I only communicate with on the site, so I know I'll why. Maybe I just need more friends there?

I used to go on myspace and facebook. But, now they are both kind of old to me. I only want to belong to blog sites or sites that actually serve a purpose now. But that's just my opinon. I guess I've got better ways to spend my time now. Have fun!

Intention, integrity and quality counts for me

Haha Liz, I can see you'playing' around!

For me all this social networking is the same as with everything in my life, at least I am going that way :) . . . what is my intention when I undertake something and how can I stay in integrity with it.

That cuts out a whole lot of activities I cannot keep up with, which don't add value to me or others and have no quality.
I am not going to overeat and overindulge on communication, just because I can.

I love this site as for me it has quality, integrity and adds to others and me.

Focusing on intention, quality and integrity keeps me from overwhelm AND 'overeating '.

However I have recently caught up with two old special school friends via the internet and that was absolutely special.

This is great and you are so right... with Facebook, MySpace (which I am new to), blogs, etc., we have such incredible power to connect and share and it is so gratifying to see all of us building communities and reaching, touching, and sharing information with people that, previously, we may have never crossed paths with in life. I mean, I'm on Facebook. Or whatever we're calling it these days. Yes, I gave in.

And I'm totally addicted, and I love it. I mean, I'm still convinced that someday we're all going to regret the day we signed up, but until then, when we all realize we've made a horrible mistake, and Facebook somehow owns us, our bank accounts, and our souls, it's crazy fun, crazy useful, and crazy addictive.

I've even got my first Facebook rule, which is: If you friend request me, and I can find you in a high school yearbook (obvi that would be one of *my* high school year books!), you're in. My friends, I have even scanned some old high school musical pictures - something I feel drawn to do for hours and hours and hours, but I can't spend that kinda time, of course, so I did it once for an hour. And I want more!

Blogosphere peeps are harder - Trying to remember/decide if I really know someone or want to add them. People I network with in the entertainment industry are challenging, too. I meet *lots* of peeps, so I'm trying to keep it under control.

For the most part, I ignore the applications. There's one where you can give grip equipment (sandbags, sharpie, clamps), and that tickles me. But your drinks, your fishes, your plants... Just keep 'em to yourself. I did accept a "mistletoe kiss" the other day. I figured, hey, it's a kiss, I'll take it, even if it is virtual!

The other day I wondered, do you get a prize if every single one of your exes is a Facebook friend? I've still got a few to go...

One thing I didn't do, I haven't listed my fav books, movies, music. I'm kinda over that, and reading my lists on my MySpace is like looking at a snapshot from two years ago. I do like becoming a "fan" on Facebook. I like saying "Hey, I like that!" and then your friends see that you've done it and some of them do it, too.

Funnest thing on Facebook? When totally disparate people from totally different times & parts of your life become fans of the same thing on the same day. Trippy.

I also didn't say what I'm "looking for" from Facebook, i.e. "friends, networking, yada yada yada." That seems unnecessary and oldschool, too.

I did feel a bit overwhelmed a few days in by the influx of blasts from the past. It's not the volume of information, either - I mean, we're all learning to deal with that. Rather, it's how Facebook facilitates conversation with so many people who generations of people before us would have lost completely. I mean, before, you might have run into an old acquaintance from high school maybe once or twice in a lifetime - now I regularly have chats with them and other old high school classmates chime in. It's trippy.

I find myself wondering about how in early America if someone moved out West, you probably never saw them again. Maybe you got the occasional letter. And then, transportation evolved dramatically and that changed. And it changed us.

Now, we have the ability to keep up with hundreds of people from the entirety of our lives, and I can't help but think that that has to be changing us, too. It's really interesting to me.

Finally, the romantic status updates are killing me. To see a friend's engagement mere lines before another's breakup. And those hearts! The broken heart is so, so sad! I'm still deciding how I feel about the transparency of all that.

It is *really* interesting how the tech and dynamics of Facebook kick online social networking to a new level. Interesting, overwhelming, fun, gratifying.

And near impossible not to find yourself saying, "OMG, you *have* to get on Facebook!"
