Before the end of the academic school year I either read or heard on the news that over the past couple of years the number of assaults on Muslim students, especially women, was up on the University of Toronto campus. I'm afraid this will cause that to increase even more.

As for the people who vandalized the mosque - those are the people that make me hate people.

As reported in the news last Saturday, 17 Canadian Citizens were arrested, accused of participating in a potential plan for a terrorist attack in Canada and /or in the Toronto area. I watched the news that night and they said that the suspects came from various cultural backgrounds and ranged in ages from 18-45. Am I worried? Well, not that it has been proven that they have any affiliation with Al-Queda, but Bin Laden did say during one of his recorded messages that Canada is on his shit list.

Anyone in Toronto knows of City TV / Citypulse 24. So I'm watching their Talkback show and some guy phones in and blames the recent arrests on our Immigration system, saying that it is the immigrants 'who are allowed in this country' that are to blame. Oh, did I mention that the guy was speaking in broken English?

After spending my Sunday afternoon having Brunch with my friends and doing a bit of shopping (actually, they did - I'm broke, as usual) I arrive home and turn on the news and find out that a Mosque was vandalized. The Muslim community is scared and one of the leaders in the Muslim community had to make a statement saying that Muslim Canadians are just as upset by this as everyone else, and he made a plea to Torontonians to (I'm paraphrasing here) to leave them alone.

As with everyone, I was distraught after 9/11 and condemn the attackers. Like alot of people who knew someone who was involved somehow with the day's events, a relative of a girl I knew in university was killed in the attack on the Word Trade Towers. But vandalizing property, assaulting innocent citizens is just plain bullshit. How stupid must you be to do something like that? I don't understand what people are thinking. do you think that if you assault someone who might or might not be Muslim or from Afghanistan, that it is going to help matters? Umm, no - you will (hopefully) be arrested and charged for a hate crime. Is it worth it?

Now I understand that there are some idiots out there that think everyone who shares the same cultural / ethnic background are exactly alike. It's easier to think that way......because you don't have to think. It is also self-indulgent, as you might have your own opinions but that doesn't give you the licence to act out your ignorance on innocent people. So for the people who vandalize Mosques, randomly harass Muslim people or people of Middle-Eastern decent, shame on you.
