Disappointed by Senator Clinton

Hillary Clinton should have remained a senator. She could have made a larger contribution to America in Congress than as Secretary of State. Her political legacy would have been more lasting and prominent. Her acceptance of this consolation prize is disappointing.

I think Hillary will do fine in her new role. She might have given up becoming president any more since she'll be quite old by the next couple of elections.

While Obama has his work cut out for him, he's demonstrating his aptitude for leadership (even before assuming the presidency) by surrounding himself with smart, experienced individuals who will help the country out of the mess it's in.

I think the opportunity is a terrific one for Hillary, and a great platform for her to make big strides on the international stage. Not a consolation prize at all.

Not a consolation prize. For Hillary, it seems like a logical next step. She wants to be on the international stage, and I think she can perform well there.

As far as the other nominees, so far I'm happy with all except Holder. Living in Jackson County, WV, I well remember how the men at the local aluminum plant worked so hard to hunt down the criminal Mark Rich. Much as I liked Bill Clinton, I, along with everyone else in West Virginia, was furious about the pardon. I don't trust Holder as far as I can see him--if he can pardon a criminal like that, what else can he overlook? If you don't remember or know about the lengthy strike and the search for Rich afterwards, you need to read Ravenswood: The Steelworkers' Victory and the Revival of American Labor. It's eye-opening.

Reports: It's Official, Hillary is Secretary of State

The New York Times says it's official, Senator Hillary Clinton has accepted an offer from President-elect Barack Obama to become the nation's next Secretary of State.

"Mrs. Clinton came to her decision after additional discussion with President-elect Barack Obama about the nature of her role and his plans for foreign policy, said one of the confidants, who insisted on anonymity to discuss the situation."

Feministe is asking for "thoughts" and "reactions" while Wesleying writes, "Big Whoop!"

Law and More says, "This is a plus for Obama in that the Clintons are respected globally, especially for their intellects and political shrewdness. Also, it absorbs a former 'enemy' into a party which wants to be perceived as unified and all grown-up.
This is a plus for Hillary because it puts her into new space. It also demonstrates that she can move on from what was into what could be. In addition, it's clear this woman can be a team player.
The next hurdle would be to have this nomination approved by the Senate."

To add to the news today, several media outlets, including the Huffington Post, are reporting

"Barack Obama will name his Treasury Secretary on Monday, a Democratic source confirms to the Huffington Post. NBC News and other outlets report that Tim Geithner will get the nod over former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, but that Summers will have a senior White House role.
Geithner is currently the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and once served in the Treasury Department under Summers.
Officials also say that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is likely to be tapped as Commerce Secretary."

What are your thoughts on the Obama appointment so far- and as for Hillary fans, are you satisfied with this position or is this simply a consolation prize?
