Chilean feminist bloggers with a lot to say

As always, there's great information & news from El Club de Lulu. They've got so much going on. Women's health issues, politics, humor... everything.

Premiacion Blogs Femeninos Lulus
by elclubdelulu_cl.

The Lulus are 16 (maybe more?) women who blog like crazy!

Paz, on El Club de Lulu, writes about Chile's first milk bank which takes donations of human milk for premature babies and for babies whose moms can't breastfeed. They pasteurize the milk to prevent any small risk of HIV transmission.

This anonymous post about domestic violence is about one of the Lulus overhearing her neighbor being beaten up by her husband. She's overwhelmed with sadness - after two sleepless nights of hearing the fighting and shouting, having her neighbor pretend nothing is wrong. It's a familiar story to many of us.

I got really into the comments thread on this post about sexism in Chile. Is it "hip" to be a girl, now that they've elected President Bachelet? (I'm pretty excited about Bachelet, myself. She rocks! A doctor and a moderate socialist, complete with conscience.) There's something of a backlash already, of people saying that now women have it good, now they've got a huge advantage. (Yeah, riiiiiight.) The post's author, Maria Pastora, points out that one of the biggest problems women face, once they've won the right for equal opportunity, is how to balance work and family. Rights can be put into place, but the playing field is still not equal. Anyway, the comments thread on "Sera machista?" is quite interesting. Check out the dude who says that women have just never gotten ahead because they're always wasting time reading fashion magazines and thinking about romance. He points out that women never talk about politics on tv or the newspapers, but instead it's always about diets or needlepoint. Yeah right, that's it! That explains all of patriarchal power... Women just aren't interested... GRRRRRRR. (I think some women who are journalists and work in TV could tell a different story, one of always being put onto "girly" subjects, despite their own skills and interests.) Several commenters point out, also, that every sexist was raised by a machista (sexist) mother. (Perhaps... but what about the machista father?)

Check out their fabulous party! It made me think of this other party, back in February 2006. The BlogHer launch wasn't very long ago.

I'm so pleased to be able to introduce the Bloghers to the Lulus, and maybe the Lulus to the Bloghers! And I like to imagine us all at a party together, acting silly and having very intense conversations.
