Canada Loves World Junior Hockey

Boxing Day means different things to different Canadians. For some it's Boxing Day sales. For others it's turkey leftovers. For others it's all about hockey - World Junior hockey.

I didn't grow up in a house that followed hockey. Well, not really. I spent every other weekend with my father until I was about thirteen which means I spent a lot of Saturday nights "watching" the Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada...if by watching you mean reading books and wondering how much longer until it was over. My introduction to World Junior Hockey came via my best friend's house. I'd usually spent a night or two there between Christmas and New Year's Day and she lived in a Hockey House. There was much talking of how "the boys" were doing and checking of the scores as we sat around playing cards. It was rather infectious.

This year the competition is being held in Ottawa. Rather conveniently for me since I live there, but those without their own vehicles will be have some trouble getting around. Yes, Ottawa is still experiencing a transit strike. Early in the week everyone was hopeful that a end would come before the competition but talks broke down again. Strikers will be present at the Ottawa Civic Centre but they will not be allowed to block traffic. Thank goodness. We like our hockey fights (oh yes, we do like our hockey fights) to be done on the ice, not in the parking lot.

Valerie of the Ottawa 67's Fan Blog is a World Juniors volunteer. She's been behind the scenes watching things get set up.

It's down at the ice-level part of the arena and we had Team Canada banners, jerseys of past Team Canada gold medal captains and reminders of the long history of Team Canada success to arrange. If I may say so myself, the lounge looks pretty good. It will be a comfortable place for the families to wait for their brief meetings with their boys. Our job is to be concierges for the Team Canada family members both at SBP and at their hotel.

The Hockey Junkies say that it's Boxing Day and that means World Juniors. Check them out to get the scoop on the Canadian team.

While the World Juniors do cast an inexplicable hold over Canadians others are not immune. Check out the excitement at Sabretooth's House over the October announcement that Buffalo got the 2010-2011 World Juniors. The Buffalo World Juniors website is already up and running.
