Queer and Poppy Z

Speaking of Queer Books - I was thinking about a weekly queer book review for my book blog. Of course I haven't done more than think about it yet.

I read Poppy Z Brite's Live Journal. She scares the hell out of me. Seriously. The reason is that I worry about the kids who are reading her blog, sending her "gifts" and ummm "pharma type presents".

When she's not encouraging that sort of thing, she writes a pretty interesting blog.

There isn't a bowl of cereal big enough

Finally remembered to get something to eat after doing my first pass over the interweb with my editorial backhoe.

What a lot of book blogs there are out there.

I thought I would write a sort of editorial policy to let readers know what I am looking for:

- Posts not about that guy who lied about his memoir. I know it's a scandal alright - but I want to highlight stuff that's interesting to a wider crowd.

- Blogs that deal with specific genres/writers voices. For example I have found a blog about chicana writers and literature, two about SF, one about mystery and thriller, and one about podcasting writers.

- re: the above requirement - On my wish list; diaspora blogs (blogs by ex-pat writers writing about where they are presently living), Canadian lit-blogs, queer-lit, poetry blogs, childrens lit blogs, blogs about science writing, blogs about historical fiction, blogs on international literary communities... I could go on...you get the idea

- My final requirement is that the blogs I blog about will be blogging about other blogs to create the most efervescent storm of link-love you have ever seen.

- Oddly it is at this point that I start looking at the qualit of the writing. In my defense I find that the challenging creative authors who have met all the above requirements tend to be good authors in their own rights.

But wait!!

"What about the authors who have personal blogs and just write about their life but do it really well..?"

Good point. So I am reserving a few seconds of eyeball real estate for personal author blogs that are really engaging and interesting. My only concern with this criteria is that just like books themselves, a personal blog is usually marvellous to one person and insufferably boring to another.. so I will try to tread carefully and use my judgement when highlighting personal posts.

So that's the basic off the cuff editorial policy for the books section - if you have concerns or questions do not hesitate to ask then or to whine at me.

Here are my favorite finds of the morning;

Pinky's Paperhaus: blogging writers podcasts

Maud Newtons blog

Confessions of an Idiosyncratic Mind: A mystery/thriller blog
la Bloga: Chicano Literature, Chicano Writers, Chicano Fiction, News, Views, Reviews

girlbomb

So there's 17 already on my little list. But like books themselves, I am beginning to realize you can never read to many and there are never enough references.
