5 Blogging Lessons I Have Learned!

Blogher is a month away but the blogging talk is filling the air. First I was
excited about the conference and then the word got out about the
parties at night. Can you believe some evenings have 5 or more parties?
Then there are public parties and some private ones (ooh the tension
mounts as to whether you can get invited to one). To top it all Mommy Niri
got accepted to join the Ford Ride and Drive program, you will have to
wait until I find exactly what that is before I can tell you. If that
is not exciting enough there is even a tattoo discount for Blogher
attendees…dare I?

All of this other talk is making me forget about the business of blogging, which is what I was going to focus this dose of the Mommy Niri Friday 5 series. I know I am no expert and neither do I profess to be but I will share what I have learned so far:

Share, share, share. How often do we as parents
tell this to our kids (or maybe you just say it once, and it is just me
yelling it at the top of my head) but I find so many bloggers act as if
you are going to steal their thunder. Relax guys, there is a lot to go
around, and more will come around if you pass it around. I have tried
to ensure I pass on a new contact to someone I feel who could use it.
By sharing I don’t mean giving to some top person to be nice to them
but by giving a beginner a chance. @AudreyMcClellan
once responded to a question I asked about an event “Let’s make a pact,
we will share whatever we know of events.” and that reminded me of the
reason this Mom Generations mom is so successful. While speaking about sharing, learn to spread the knowledge. When you have good tips, share them. @babySteph shared an excellent post on asking for sponsorships.

Cut the dead weight. I have learned to remove all
things and people around me that bombard me with negativity. It takes a
lot of energy to write (I won’t go on saying I work hard on the blog,
most bloggers do so it is superfluous to state) and the last thing you
want is people around you that bring you down. It is hard enough to
believe in yourself to cut through some comments laced with (hidden)
meaness.

Don’t just look up. I know some people who just
try to speak to the people in the high rungs and ignore people they
deem “smaller” people. It is important to hear others and not always
think of being heard only. On many ocassions I have been speaking with
a college student to later find out she works at some big company and I
get in on an amazing project. Big people can get small and small people
can get big. Bloggers like @katjapresnal and @BarabraJones are highly sought after people in the blogging community yet they make you feel right at home.

Read between the lines. Or just read the lines (in
your email/twitter, etc). Too often good opportunities are embedded in
a long email. Many people have a tendency to skim email which is a
mistake. I would never have had such wonderful adventures as Flying in
the Up chair as part of the Disney/Pixar promotion had I not read all my email.

Keep talking. So often we fail to communicate. I
am guilty of it too like everyone else but I think I make a tighter
attempt at it. Some people think I am really fast while some think I
have nothing to do hence I reply quickly. I believe in dealing with my
inbox fast so things don’t pile up and eventually get ignored. Always
great efficiency of time to get the reply done so the other person is
parsing the information and you can move on. People don’t mind these
things being late or some project getting messed up, they care about
not being told.
