Wow...Katie's coming to BlogHer'09. What a huge opportunity for the BlogHer community.

I spent time with Katie through a media training workshop sponsored by the Women's Media Center last year, and she gave the group an abbreviated version of her day-long seminar. The amount of information and concrete take-homes she packed into a short amount of time was amazing, and everything was practical and helpful.

If you want to strengthen and refine your voice -- or write an op-ed for a local paper or a regional or national outlet -- RUN to her presentations at BlogHer'09. If you're in Chicago on Sunday, sign up for her seminar. I can't stress enough how invaluable her expertise is, and she's a great, warm, funny, accessible speaker/presenter. There isn't anyone who wouldn't get something out of a Katie Orenstein presentation, and I'm even thinking of attending again. (I hope to see you there.) She is that good.

If media training is something you're interested in and you live in the New York City area, I'd highly recommend you contact the Women's Media Center -- they have an affordable media training program that they're offering to women, and the knowledge you'll gain and the exposure to media professionals at some of the top outlets in the country is invaluable. They wanted to attend BlogHer'09 but registered too late, but I know they're working on being a part of BlogHer'10.

If there’s one thing that Katie Orenstein is passionate about, it’s helping women’s voices penetrate the largely male-dominated (by 85%) Op-Eds (for those not familiar with journalism lingo, that’s an opinion piece historically published in newspapers opposite the editorial page, but which has now translated to online forums, as well). Katie is founder of The OpEd Project, a day-long seminar created to help women find their voices and engage in these public debates. She is bringing a portion of her seminar to BlogHer ’09, leading two sessions in our Leadership track: “Owning Your Expertise” and “Writing Your Op-Ed.”

Katie has been interviewed and featured across a variety of media channels, including one segment about The OpEd Project on NPR with “Tell me More” host Michael Martin and another bit with CBS News’ Katie Couric. One of her alums wrote a piece published in More Magazine, “Finding My Voice at Fifty”, which discusses Katie and The OpEd Project. She has been featured in the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Feministing.com and an array of other publications and websites.

If you want to get more traction with your writing and blogging about the political, social and cultural issues that are most important to you, but don’t know where to start, consider joining the Owning Your Expertise panel at BlogHer ’09. Additionally, in Writing Your Op-Ed, Katie will walk us through the basic structure of crafting an opinion piece, including what makes it credible and tactics to achieve publication. Whether you’re hoping to infiltrate mainstream media or publish opinion pieces on your blog, these sessions will help improve your writing and persuasiveness.
